Navigating Socially

June 28, 2022 by Kelsi

Introductions of chimps takes a lot of trust, for chimps and humans! When we talk about the integration of the nine so many emotions flood through the staff’s head. We are excited, optimistic, terrified, elated, in awe, petrified, and most importantly so so proud! During the whole process everyone has exceeded whatever exceptions we had ever thought possible, especially the “wild cards”. It has been so fun to watch the navigate these social situation! Honey B in particular has made so many friends! For example, Honey B “mall walks” with Rayne, playing with Dora, and being really goofy with Terry. Through this whole process we have been so proud of Honey B, but just the past couple of weeks Honey B has spending more time with other chimps and less time alone and isn’t that what this all about!! I have so much more I want to write and I was starting to make a video of Honey and Terry playing, but unfortunately we had a staff meeting and the day got away from me! Grace promises to post it tomorrow!

Also, yesterday via our e-newsletter, Diana reminded everyone of the $50,000 matching opportunity from Jennifer Douglas that expires in just two days. We are now just $3,736 away from meeting the match! Learn more about it and how you can help us get all the way there: https://chimpsnw.salsalabs.org/daysleft.

Here are some photos to get you by until tomorrow!

Dora is the perfect pocket sized friend:

And a classic Jamie pose:

As a update Burrito is also doing great! He has lots of energy and a good appetite!

Oh I’m just so so happy for Honey B! With so many friends and activities, no wonder we finally got a picture with her eyes closed! And her photos with little Dora are just so heartwarming. Hand over heart I just love Honey B so much and I’m so incredibly happy for her. And PROUD!

and thank you for the Jamie chuckle. I did indeed laugh out loud?

I’m a Honey B Pal. when I selected her, several years ago, I wasn’t exactly sure why except that I sensed she was very intelligent and a wily one. I have made assumptions over the years that were entirely wrong but I got it right with this beautiful girl ?

I can actually see how happy Honey B is. It’s all over her face in these photos with Dora. Proving that chimpanzees are never “too old” to move to a sanctuary home, start a whole new life, and make new friends. New friends soon become family.

Love seeing Jamie doing her bat imitation!! Hope Burrito will be well enough to be back with his family soon.

Happy Honey B….wonderful! I went to the dentist yesterday for a long session and I took the photos of Bubba’s tooth to show her…..they were all very impressed, and had a good laugh at him falling asleep in his mashed sweet potato. We had a discussion about how you get chimpanzees to conform to post extraction guidlines to prevent dry socket etc….another challenge, no doubt, for all the caregivers. I can’t think of ANYTHING that would put our little champion off his food!

I love Dora’s smile. Even the smile in her eyes.

What a great story Kelsi, I am very happy for Honey B. to come out of her shell.
I wouldn’t mind to SEE the Mall walk of the sisters……
And do I detect a little triumph in that lovely smile of Honey B.’s ??( Hey Mave, I love Dora too…) How is Negra doing, is she fully recovered?

Ohhhhh, Kelsi, thank you so much for your choice of photos. I just adore the pic of Honey B embracing Dora and must admit it brought tears to my eyes. And thanks for updating us on Burrito’s recovery. I don’t think I’ll ever get that image of his “Mount Everest” tooth (quoting Kathleen here) out of my mind. I’m so heartened that the integration of the 9 continues to go well. Yep, we’re “never too old to make new friends who then become family”, again per Kathleen’s comment, and I’m so happy that the chimps aren’t either.
