Munch munch munch…

June 16, 2022 by Sofia Castro-Loza

There is something very relaxing about watching and listening to chimps as they munch on their meals or forages. Before having access to the hill, Negra stood by the opened up side of the green house caging asking me to smuggle her some prickly lettuce. Annie then joined to ask for some as well. The hill is covered with prickly lettuce and as soon as the group got access to the hill they bolted to forage some naturally grown greens. On mornings like these it is not unusual for Annie to even skip her breakfast but today she came in for breakfast served in the green house.

On the other side of the building the chimps really enjoyed their lunch: strawberries, leeks, and mini peppers.

Watch today’s video for a close up glimpse of their meals.

Ohhhh! Sofia, I agree with you! I find those sounds not only relaxing but also totally adorable!! The smackings and tooth chompings just make me smile. It’s like they’re extracting every single ounce of deliciousness out of whatever is being chomped on. And since I know what a strawberry tastes like (but not prickly lettuce) I can imagine what they’re tasting while chewing. Barbra Streisand has a line in something she recorded that says “It tastes better that way” to make schlurping sounds when eating or drinking. Agreed!!! And so happy to share in the chimps’ enjoyment!!

Thanks Sofía, for posting that about Neggie! That pic at the end of the video made me worry that she was having a “no legs” day!
Beezus made those strawberries look amazing!
How often do they get strawberries? And how many does it take to feed both houses?

I’m curious about when you think the Brae will be finished, and will the Lucky 9 be able to explore it this year?

I found it interesting, with all the greens they forage out of Youngs Hill that we would consider inedible, and skins and peels we have seen them eat that we wouldnt, that Honey B bites the top off the strawberries and spits it out the same way we would!!

I agree; it gave me a chuckle because it is so recognizable.

Funny you should mention prickly lettuce…..I saw some prickly lettuce in one of the paly yards at the shelter where I was volunteering today and immediately I thought of the chimps. So I told the dog I was with all about The Seven. (True story, oh, and the silly dog I was with loved the happy ending to the chimps story.)

It’s always gratifying to see the chimps munching, crunching and enjoying their meals. I like the way Honey B de-stems her strawberries. Thanks for letting us get so close to the meal time action.

This reminded me of when my mom was in a care home and I would go for dinner with her and her lady friends. At the end of the dinner we would all get root beer floats. One sweet little lady always always drew out the last slurp through her straw. You know the sound. Then one evening, I slurped along with her, and then everyone else did too. Then every night, everyone slurped. It became our tradition and I cherished it

Because we ended every dinner with laughter! We would slurp and then crack up at ourselves!
