The Grass is Always Greener

May 1, 2022 by Chad de Bree

As caregivers arrived this morning, the sun was bright and the weather was warm. So one of our first orders of business was to conduct our security checks to let Negra’s group out onto Young’s Hill as soon as possible. As the door that leads to Young’s Hill opened, all seven filtered through, with Negra in the lead.

As I watched Negra sitting in warm sun, seemingly taking it all in, I was amazed at how green the grass was. It’s just one of those things I don’t notice as it’s happening until I see it through the view of the camera lens.

On her way in, Negra found a pine cone that she wanted to bring back to her Greenhouse.

It was at this point I knew a lunch forage was in store today. How could I not let them have a forage on such a beautiful day?

On today’s menu was sweet potatoes, mini bell peppers, carrots, and chow biscuits.

Have you ever had that feeling you’re being watching?

Oh, it’s just Burrito:

As you read about Negra’s group enjoying their lunch forage on Young’s Hill, please don’t forget that construction is well under way to complete the outdoor habitat for the new group of nine! One way you can help us is to donate, and what better way to donate than to help with Monica and Diana’s WA GiveBIG wish? Every little bit helps ensure the construction continues to move along and helps us get closer to letting Cy’s group enjoy a forage on their own hill.

Wow, thanks for the great shots of the seven! It was also great to see Negra out first instead of lounging…
Mind you, the nice weather helps!

Negra was first out on the hill. Like Linda, these are my very favorite words to hear! Especially when the spring grass has sprung.

Thank you Chad for this post and the plethora of photos!! I always feel such joy, pure joy, seeing the Seven exploring the wonders of Young’s Hill. I mean Negra. Negra! She appears to look ten years younger when she is outside on Young’s Hill (and she knows it.). And Jody becomes the Forager Extraordinaire! Missy becomes an Olympic athlete. Jamie keeps everyone tight and secure through her patrols. And Burrito….. Burrito gives us joy and makes us laugh as he bravely tackles towers and tightropes and advises Jamie as het Second in Command.

Being outside in the natural world is magic. I can’t wait to see the New Nine, in their own time and in their own way, expanding their worlds and imaginations once their new outdoors enclosures are built.

I hold my breath in anticipation.

I was going to add my own comment, but you wrote everything that I wanted to type, Kathleen (and considerably better!), so I second your comments. Wheh Her Majesty is outdoors in the Springtime amongst the new greenery, she does look and seem to be a decade younger.

I agree with Tobin, Kathleen — your words are what I’d have written, too! It’s so heartwarming to see the gang out & about enjoying the grass, the sun and the forage. Great photos! Burrito in the hammock made me laugh out loud. Thanks much, Chad!

Thank you, Chad! There IS nothing better! Seeing Farmer Jo reminded me that she has a birthday coming up soon!

So many great photos! Everyone looks so happy and relaxed enjoying the beautiful weather. There is just something so wonderful seeing Negra sitting in the sunshine. I can’t ever find the right words….she has such a special presence surrounding her!

I see Jaymie is enjoying her peppers again!
