Much to Celebrate Today

April 17, 2022 by Chad de Bree

After a week of snowy conditions, there was the break in the weather where it was sunny and warm enough to celebrate today.

When Missy’s group were first given access to Young’s Hill this morning, everybody went out and explored the Hill. In fact, Negra was the first one out, if you can believe it or not! As the chimpanzees scattered across their outdoor enclosure, I saw Missy at the very top on the furthest structure surveying her domain.

Later on in the day, the weather still held out for a forage outside. Today was filled with paper eggs containing nuts, carrots, sweet potatoes, mini bell peppers, and hard boiled eggs for all!

Here is one of the paper eggs as seen in Willy B’s enclosure for reference (of course they celebrated too!):

Initially we caregivers thought Jamie’s group would run out onto the hill, grab what they could, and head back to their greenhouse since a slight, chilly breeze began to pick up. We were wrong! Every single one of them stayed out for quite some time, enjoying their forage.

On the other side of the Chimp House, both Willy B’s group and Cy’s group also enjoyed their set up.

For those who celebrate, we wish you a:

Happy Easter!

Ramadan Mubarak!

Oh, that’s right! I should’ve known that…I can just hear Randy singing it in that Fats Waller voice of his, dripping sarcasm.

Wonderful pictures thank you so much. So glad the chimps enjoyed their Easter forage. Happy Easter!

Oh, I am SO glad to see that the weather cooperated and that Neggie, Jamie and Co. were able to take in a Easter Carrot Hunt on Young’s Hill today. Last week after it had snowed and Jamie and Negra looked disappointed, I had “written” to Negra (she went back into hibernation, so I don’t suppose that Royalty could be bothered to forward a reply) that I was fairly certain that today’s Easter forage would still be on schedule. Thus, I am glad to see that someone or someones (a large legamorph, perhaps?) left behind something for Neggie to chew and wadge.

As always, I am so grateful to the human caregivers who provide such knowledgable and compassionate care for the cattle and chimpanzees who reside at the Sanctuary. You provide them not only the opportunity to live, but to do so in abundance. In deepest gratitude — Tobin.

Did Jamie leave anything, like a single pepper perhaps, for the rest of the gang?! Wow, Jamie gets the forage haul award for this round. Clearly Jody chose to forfeit the position as she appears to be caught with one scrawny carrot?! Even Burrtio has a bigger haul than Jody. And then there’s Negra, looking pleased with her fresh carrots. Everyone looks happy to be foraging on the hill.

I love the paper eggs Chad. What a fun idea. Willy B’s face says it all!! Today was a festive feast no matter what the celebration was.

What a fun photo array! I laughed out loud when I saw Jamie’s haul which others have commented on, too. Gee, too bad she didn’t think to put more peppers in any other orifice, like in her ear! That pic of her mouth stuffed with them is just hilarious. It looks like they all had a great time, and it’s thrilling to see them enjoying the beginnings of the season.
