Burrito’s Birthday Dinner

January 7, 2022 by J.B.

For the last couple of days we’ve been forced to focus less of our attention on Burrito’s birthday and more on the historic snowfall that we experienced this week. According to the National Weather Service, we recorded the most snowfall ever for our area in a 24-hr period, coming in somewhere around two feet, with much more snow falling both before and after. This afternoon we watched a 6′-tall block of snow, which we dubbed “the iceberg”, slide off the roof, taking a vent pipe along with it. This snow will undoubtedly continue to demand our attention for many days and weeks to come.

But even with this unfortunate distraction, there was no way we could overlook Burrito’s birthday dinner. In fact, it was a dinner so nice we made it twice! I think he enjoyed it even more the second night.

As we dig out from this storm, we’re happy knowing that Burrito has a full stomach and lots of friends to play with, and we’ve got staff and volunteers and plenty of food and supplies. We’ll just hope to not set any more records this month.

Looks like Jamie is just as happy with pasta as Mr B! (who didn’t seem so hungry for a change!) And ol’ Foxie, spitting out the peppers as usual!

Thanks to all who showed up at a difficult time to make this happen!

I just love all the grunts, groans and smackings going on! Thanks for braving the weather to provide us this video of the feast. Pasta-cam, congrats! One thing I’ve taken away from this video for certain: I really need to work on my ability to carry more things in my mouth! Bigger canines would help, clearly. But I’m going to work on it to see how it goes (not over carpet, however) as I take lessons from Jamie, Burrito and the gang(s). Takes more finesse than I might be able to muster, that’s for sure. I won’t try it walking up the stairs right away but I can see the benefits.

Incredible stats on your storm. You purchased that nifty tractor just in time. Hope it makes some of the hard work a tad easier or, at the very least, a tad more comfortable. There are no “snow days” for sanctuaries, shelters, or zoos. Can’t thank you enough for being there, especially during difficult times.

Neither rain nor snow nor gloom of night will keep you caregivers from serving up a special meal for Burrito’s birthday — and serving à la pasta cam no less!! You know it’s a good meal when the birthday boys new BFF enjoys the food more than the guest of honor. Jamie sounded as if she was in heaven eating her pasta. And poor Burrito dumped half of his pasta, it slipped right out of his paper boat!

Hugs to everyone. I’ll be thinking of you…

And the grunt right after he dropped it tells me that Jamie probably got it. Glad to see Annie kept hers.
      I don’t think we’ve ever had such a close-up of Jamie eating

I found myself wanting to food grunt along with the Birthday Bub and his party guests. Oh, Burrito is just adorable beyond words and food squeaks! The snow flurries notwithstanding, of course he deserves (at least) two birthday parties this year.

When we get 2 inches of snow here in England the place comes to a halt! You guys battling through 2 feet of snow to get to the sanctuary is heroic. Well done all of the Chimps NW team your dedication and effort does not go unnoticed.

Man, everyone was so excited about the pasta dinner! Love hearing them all happy!

I can’t even imagine two feet of snow, much less clearing it! Thank goodness for the tractor; I’m sure it’s coming in handy.

Hope everyone stays safe, warm and fed. And hope you have lots of sunshine to melt that snow. Don’t know what’s more troublesome, the snow or wet, sloshy mess when it melts!

You are all amazing–accomplishing those dinners in the midst of a snow emergency! On top of that, the chimps’ quarters look so clean and decorated with their favorites!! That is quite an accomplishment and a tribute to all at CSNW!! About that pasta–I think Burrito’s approach is so much better than the slow process of using a fork and spinning it on a spoon!!
