Chimp ID: Terry

December 7, 2021 by Chad de Bree

It seems to have been a while since the last time we did a Chimp ID from the new group. So who better to pickup where we left off than with Terry!

Terry is by far the “floofiest” of the bunch. It’s took the point where sometimes we have difficulty in determining if he is piloerect, or if he’s just that fuzzy.

Cy, Gordo, and Terry. You can see the comparison here.

Terry always tries to get caregivers’ attention. You can hear Terry pretty much anywhere blowing raspberries to get some attention from caregivers. When Terry is interested in your footwear, he will blow raspberries then spit water at your boots and only your boots, which he loves to groom.

Terry grooming Sofia’s boots.

He also has a peculiar way of greeting caregivers: licking the back of our hands.

Caregiver Kelsi allows Terry to “kiss” the back of her gloved hand.

Terry is also a big fan of food!

Usually, we can often find Terry with something in his mouth. Whether that is a wadge made from the paper bags his primate chow come in or wooden blocks.

Terry is also a fan of food puzzles, especially Boomer Balls.

Terry carrying three Boomer Balls with Rayne right behind him.

Terry is just a big, lovable goofball who is extremely difficult not to love when you meet him.

We all love Terry!

    Yay for Terry!
Does he have a favorite food, Chad? (I’m not going to assume Hawaiian rolls, those seem to be almost everyone’s fav!)

So far we believe all food is his favorite food, however he will blow raspberries more for some things like tomatoes and oranges.

        December 8, 2021 at 1:01 pm

Oranges are good, too! And the one who will fight him for the tomatoes is on the other side!
        Thanks, Chad!
        Happy Wednesday…it’ll be over soon!

This reminds me of my favorite neighbor who I once ran into at a local street fair. He was holding cheese curds, corn dogs etc (Midwest gourmet food) and I asked him if the food was good. His reply: “All food is good!”

In their previous habitat, did they get the same level of interaction with staff or is this a new experience for them..?

      Hi Tom
In the video they did before they brought them (or the one they did for NAPSA/7th generation), we got to meet the gentleman who used to work with them. But I guess it depends on how many people were there to care for 30 chimps.

Thanks Chad for officially introducing us to everything Terry! His is gorgeous because of all that “floofieness” going on. I adore his freckles and the twinkle in his eyes. And his size. (Again, maybe he just looks big because he is floofy!). It is such fun knowing what each chimps likes, such as Terry loving his Boomer Balls and funnier knowing their quirky habits like raspberry blowing and politely spitting water on your rubber boots (as opposed to your face……(not mentioning any names here but you know who you are!) 🙂

I love these pics and getting to know Terry better — and especially love him licking the backs of gloved hands! So endearing. Am I recalling correctly that it’s Terry who’s amorous w/ the ladies? I wonder how they feel about his attentions given what a gorgeous dude he is! It’s lovely to have this special focus on a single chimp on occasion so we can get to know them more, esp the newer chimps. Thanks for this in-depth time with him!

Amorous? Terry? Er…you might say that he is the Austin Powers of Cle Elum (eee-yeeaaah, bayyy-beee!).

Yes, Marya, you remember correctly! :joy:

There is nothing I like more than a loveable goofball. Terry is a big cutie. I would love to bring my tennis shoes over and have Terry groom them and remove small rocks that get lodged in the soles while walking my dog. It looks like he is doing a good job on the boots.

    Hi Chad!
Hey that last picture looks like he just came from the groomer. Your description of his personality reminds me of Burrito. Always something in his mouth, likes boomer balls (or giant kongs), freckles on his face. A Big Burrito!

We hear his incessant raspberries in the background of some videos. Does it drive you nuts?

And food! The man loves his foid!

Does anyone else see a heart when you look at Terry’s face in the last photo? I do!! He’s a charming, boatload of COOL! I love having one on one time like this. I’m still getting to know all of them! I love Terry!
Thank you for this special treat Chad!

Strange, but just today I received the email Notification for this comment. Anyway…

Janet, YES! I do see the heart now. So cool! I had commented on that photo that he looked like he had just come from the groomer because his mane is just so perfect.

We are so happy for Josh and his group’s safe journey to their new home at Center for Great Apes! We always love hearing stories and updates about him because according to the records, his mom is Missy, which also makes Honey B his half-sister.
