Going Head to Head & Toe to Toe

June 23, 2021 by Kelsi

What a wonderful day, especially for Burrito. To no surprise he was playing all day! If he wasn’t making his caregiver’s run until they almost passed out from heat exhaustion then he was playing with other chimps and even a giant stuffed unicorn. There is some video of him playing with the unicorn, but the clip was hard to fit in with all the amazing other play sessions going on. However, I feel I need to describe to you what happened. It was amazing! Caregiver Chad was outside fixing a few holes on the rattle snake fence when he noticed Burrito dragging a giant stuffed unicorn onto Young’s Hill. He was even throwing it up into the air (that part was not caught on camera). Burrito then dragged the unicorn back to the raceway and eventually into the greenhouse. Which led into a lazy wrestling game with Foxie. Later, we found Burrito playing with Jamie. They had their heads together, breathy panting (chimp laughing), and grabbing each other’s toes. All in all it was a good day, but Burrito had a great day.

We have been very busy getting ready for the arrival of Cy, Lucky, Gordo, Dora, Rayne, and Terry and it’s coming up quickly! We have added more stuff to the Wish List in preparation of the 6 new chimps. We are hoping to get some new chairs. They have been really helpful for Honey B, Willy B, and Mave in the new greenhouses. But, the chimps use the chairs everyday. Jamie loves them for sitting and grooming her favorite pair of boots, many like to lay on them, and sometimes they use the chairs as tables to put their food on.

Poor Jamie! How is she supposed to get any bossing done when a miscreant such as Bubs keeps infringing upon her supervisory duties? Why, this brings to mind the blog post from April 16, when Burrito thought that he would be cute and disrupt J.B.’s very important weight measurement of him. Talk about “Taunting the Scale Operator.” Is there no reverence for the tabulation of empirical evidence? Oh, the humanities (and/or “primativities”!…

On a more concerning note, I trust that the humans employed at the sanctuary have precautions in place for the heatwave that is and will affect Cle Elum. Though Jamie and Burrito are indigenous to equatorial Africa, I am not sure if they are habituated to the heat storm which is being forecast for the state of Washington. Please keep them and their bovine neighbors well-hydrated and, if necessary, inside until this Man-made consequence of climate disaster relents somewhat..

oh, I just looked back and was giggling at J.B.’s blog! Yes, between Burrito and training our new staff members Jamie hasn’t been able to supervise the whole building!

Yes, we have a heatwave coming! We have Gatorade, misters, and ice to make slushies if need be. We may even have to tell Burrito we can’t chase on the 106-degree day…

How do you keep rattlesnakes out of the chimp area?

Hi Connie! We have fencing that goes around the entire perimeter of Young’s Hill. Rattlesnakes don’t tend to climb, so it is a tall barrier that they can’t pass.

Now I see what is wrong with us human primates, we do not engage in heads-down-butts-up giggly behavior. We are missing out! And I think Burrito and Jamie’s friendship is good for Jamie because it appears her ‘over grooming’ of her tummy now looks as if it is filling in. Maybe these play sessions with silly Burrito are good medicine or good therapy for her.

I zipped over to your Amazon Wish List to purchase a chair but the chair you have listed is no longer available. Knowing these chairs need to be *Chimp Proof*, I would not select another brand without your approval. Is there another brand you would recommend? Let me know. Clearly, with the numerous uses, you can’t have too many chairs!

Yes! I would have to agree Burrito is the best medicine :). It has been such a joy to watching their friendship evolve. He brings out a playful side of Jamie. I have actually heard them a couple of times this week playing in front room 4 while we clean the playroom! It’s nice to see Jamie play more than just every once in a while.

I found a different brand, but the same chair. I will add a few more to the list right now too. It really never hurts to have extra :).

Thanks Kelsi, but that doesn’t link to the sanctuary’s wish list page with address confidential, etc

Kathleen, I sa that, and thought the same thing!
