they’re called playrooms for a reason

May 8, 2021 by Diana

Or maybe they should be called multi-purpose rooms?

I hope you enjoy the video as much as I enjoyed watching these clips over and over!

I had many technical difficulties with computers and software today, so you are seeing this video after a great deal of perseverance. I almost gave up a few times, but I’m pretty stubborn.

I was thinking of you all in my stubbornness. I wanted to deliver some quality footage of the Californians in part of the new playroom space. It’s fun to be able to film through the windows for those close-up views, even when Willy B videobombs the camera.

Much appreciated…I was surprised to see gentle Mave’s terrific display! šŸ™‚

    Thanks for being stubborn, Diana!
    It was worth it!
I, too, loved Mave’s hop! She looked like a spider!

So, if Willy B settles down to watch something on your phones, how long do you typically have to stay there holding the phone? šŸ˜€

Knowing the patience and commitment of these caregivers……I would think: as long as Willy B. wants!

I dunno, Marianne….remember, this is the guy who Watches Ice Age 3x in a row! šŸ˜‰

It’s similar to Burrito with playing – rarely does Willy B decide he’s had enough of watching videos, so we often have to attempt to shift to a different activity or politely excuse ourselves.

Mave has always appeared to be very reserved…….but clearly has the ability to go ballistic…….

thank you Diana. Terrific representation of personalities and behaviors… must have been quite a project to get this video condensed and captioned for us .. We are all appreciative… now off to inspect my teeth in the mirror šŸ™‚

This morning I woke up with the thought that I had not seen Mave in the blog for a while….And there she is!
Thanks Diana, lovely to see the Californians enjoying the playrooms, what a great space to skateboard ĆØh?
And at the same time enough room to hang against the wall and eat willow…or display to show the world what a tough boy you are…
About displaying, it always makes me laugh to see them go over the top, and then when it’s done, check their feet as if nothing happened.
For me it feels like Mave is, by hopping and screaming telling some one ( Willy ) to not be so noisy.
It all makes me very happy to see those chimps having a great life.

And the Oscar for best male performance goes to…..Willy B! Actor, director, producer, are amongst his many talents. His prize is an Apple! What a ham! I love Mave’s bouncy jumping too. Honey B is so cute, just scooting’ around. They’re all so beautiful.

I will never, ever tire of watching Willy look at his teeth; bc it’s exactly what I do first when I look into a mirror. (I was in an accident and was ejected from my vehicle so my right side took most of the damage-including one front tooth and 6 others in the back.) after having $30,000 worth of implants which 4 1/2 years I’m still paying off that loan lol-I always check my teeth bc for some reason no matter how much bleaching I still think the one tooth looks like a big white chicklet! I wanted to ask about the book ā€œChimpanzee politicsā€ bc ive wanted to read it so badly however when I looked up the price it was almost $220 w/o shipping. My question is, is it a school textbook for the study of primates and do you guys know where to get one cheaper? I’m seriously looking into going back to school for the sole purpose of studying primates. Thanks for all you guys do; I’m sure you hear how lucky you are to have a job like yours but it’s probably more work than running a daycare center. Probably harder!

Hi Stevie, that price is wild! Here’s a link to Amazon for new paperback at $28.00. It’s a large book and worth every penny. Plus this 25th anniversary edition shares some new insight. It is a favorite book of mine and since you’re a blog follower you will become emotionally invested in the chimpanzee group in the book so prepare yourself. To this day Mama is one of my favorite ā€˜older ladies’ (Negra being #1 on the older lady list). Mama is no longer with us but you’ll learn a great deal from her.

I can relate too! I am missing some teeth due to genetics – I just never had them. I have bridges that I’m constantly aware of and frequently inspecting. šŸ™‚ I hope you enjoy the book. I need to reread that one.

Thank goodness you are a determined woman (how else could CSNW be where it is today?!) and you stuck it out to show those technological glitches whose boss. Can I ask if you chose to display a little to show the computer whose got the power and mental strength?

Not that it matters but I do hope all three find the courage within themselves some day to venture outside and explore. Seeing Mave with her fresh willow branch made me think of Farmer Jo. Just think of all the ready for picking yummy treats Mave could discover. But the beautiful reality is this, if Mave chooses to claim the inner safety of the chimp house as her sanctuary home, she’s still surrounded by freshly plucked greens from the hill and she can forage for them within the comfort of her four (lovingly painted and windowed) walls. And… she can rock a display when she wants too!

Delightful seeing the CA Three hanging out doing what they enjoy. Thanks Diana! Made my cold-and-dreary day a happy day!

Willy B looked pretty scary during his display, I think. And then he went back to examining his teeth. I agree with everyone else that Mave’s display was worth the wait. Short and one for the books. I would also love to see these 3 outside. I bet Honey B would be a terror on the climbs, and I’d love to see her run full tilt. But that’s what I, a human want. They know what’s best for them and you all know enough to ensure that they have their own choices. Good on ya!

Hope you enjoy it Mo! I learned a great deal ‘observing’ the chimps at Burger’s Zoo through the pages of Frans de Waal’s book. He also has a book titled “Mama’s Last Hug. Animal emotions and what they tell us about ourselves”. ; )

I have “Mama’s Last Hug”…to think that all those years ago, if I had known I was having dinner with an Anthropology rock star, I could have had a SIGNED copy! (Face palm emoji)
