Different ways of getting around

June 20, 2020 by Diana

This post was originally about family. I was writing it in my head throughout the day. I was going to talk about how the chimpanzees at the sanctuary are really a lot like other families because they did not choose to be together, but they had to figure out their relationships and find the things they liked about each other.

More words, hopefully an interesting insight, blah, blah, blah.

Then I watched the video clips that I had taken and I was fascinated just by the way the different chimpanzees in the clips moved.

If you’ve ever been hanging out at a race to cheer on a friend or relative running, I’m sure you were surprised by the variation in the way that human beings move their bodies when they are running. There are a few people who look natural and graceful while running, but most of us are a bit on the awkward side of things when it comes to speedy locomotion. I think the same can be said for chimpanzees.

We primates will not be mistaken for cheetahs anytime soon, but we do okay getting from one place to another, and sometimes, like Missy and Burrito and Jody and Foxie in the video above, we can have fun doing it.

I’m not a natural athlete, and I’m envious of Missy, who is. I love watching her run.
Willy B looks so peaceful taking his time, exploring his surroundings at his own pace. It’s gratifying to see him have the space and time to do that.
Your expansion plans look wonderful! Can’t wait for more chimps!

not only her speed, but her joy! She’s doing it….just because she can! Making up for lost time!

Love the post.. the observations… and the theme/s Diana… How fascinating to study the ways of locomotion of each being.. it’s as different as the personalities.. in all of us. Willy B is one handsome devil.. it’s so cool to watch his progress and see how clever he is in dealing with such “unfamiliar ground”. Thanks for the wonderful video, pic and post, Hugs to you Diana.. and to the rest of the team, whether covered with hair or not. 🙂

After seeing The Seven patrol and run about their enclosure all these years, I am enjoying watching Willy B with his slow, cautious, and ever so endearing manner of exploration. Geez I love this big guy. And speaking of loving big guys, Burritos attempt to keep up with Missy wisely fizzled out. As if, but I give him credit for trying! It was also sweet seeing Jody keeping a close eye on Foxie as they headed back towards the building, just like a good den mother should do. Annie, she looks oh so vogue as she heads out on her runway.

I wonder if Willy B has told the girls to stay inside and that only brave boys can go outside. Maybe he wants to keep all the treats for himself?
