Her mouth says play…..but that open-mouthed stare might be tension….like a confrontational stare (JUST today finished looking at Frans’ “My Family Album”, so I can ship it off to The Boss–there’re lots of bonobo photos in it).

Not that I’m copping off anyone else’s answers, but, I’d say: B, C, D, B. It grieves me to see Negra (or, for that, matter, any chimpanzee) displaying a fear grimace. Hopefully, the serpent slithered away…
Linda says
Lol, Tobin, maybe it wasn’t a snake……maybe her frog tasted “off”…..:P
Harley Robb says

Kelsi says
Wow! You all did amazing! I have an answer key below, but I don’t think I even had to make one!
1. B. Play face: Chimpanzees cover their top teeth when they are playful or smiling. Which is the opposite of use humans! When chimps show their top teeth, it is often a sign of fear or feeling threatened.
2. C. Reassurance: Chimps give each other reassurance just like humans do. There are many different ways chimps can give reassurance a few examples you may see in our photos/videos are giving a hug, kiss, or extend an arm to on another.
3. D. Fear Grimace: When chimps make, a fear grimace their top teeth will be showing. It will often coincide with pilo (hair standing up) and arousal level increasing. This can be caused by too much excitement such as food or if for example Burrito began to display and the group became scared.
4. B. Pilo: Chimps often become Pilo, meaning the hair standing on end, when there are high arousal situations. It could be anything from a chimp(s) becoming overly excited or afraid. You may often notice when chimps are displaying they become pilo and their hair stands up, chimps look bigger and more threatening.
