First day of spring!

March 20, 2019 by Anna

We seem to have (temporarily) skipped right over the dreary days that usually accompany early spring and catapulted directly into that warm sunshiny bliss we’ve all been looking forward to. The chimps have welcomed it with open arms.

They all bustled outside as soon as I opened the door to Young’s Hill this morning.

Fair weather Negra made an appearance to soak up a few rays.

Or possibly just to eat that last bit of winter that remains:

Welcome spring, we missed you!

Great pictures of Annie and Negra and the rest bounding onto Young’s Hill on the first official day of Spring. I wish seasonable weather for all who live and work at the sanctuary.

I always enjoy celebrating the equinoxes and the solstices. Welcoming in the new season and bidding farewell to old season is a lovely ritual and I can see the chimps enjoy it too. Even Negra. We had a warm, sunny day today and like Negra and Annie, I couldn’t wait to get outside and breathe in the warmer air and sit quietly so I could listen to all the amazing sounds of spring. All of nature was stirring!

PLUS, it’s a full moon tonight! It is said that the Native Americans in the north called this the Full Crow Moon, when the cawing of crows signaled the end of winter; or the Full Crust Moon, because the snow cover becomes crusted from thawing by day and freezing at night. (The mention of the snow crust made me think of Foxie braving her snow adventure the other day!). Maybe the Full Crust Moon will entice Jamie to patrol Young’s Hill late after dark this evening! ; )

    Happy Spring Equinox everyone!

I love it when the chimps are backlit in your photos!
The one you have of Jamie and Foxie on the main page is astounding…it’s almost purple and their eyes seem to glow…..

We were able to see tonight’s moon, sadly, January’s super moon didn’t show here due to clouds and weather. But as we came out after dinner tonight, we saw it glowing high and bright. My apartment’s in an old mansion, and the bedroom is almost round, because there’s a sort of tower on one side of the house. So there are 5 windows in the bedroom, 13 foot tall ceilings…..as the night goes along, the moon seems to move around the tower, peeking into a different window according to what time it is. I’ll probably be noticing it tonight, as it’s very bright.
    Happy spring!
