The chimpanzees eat a diet consisting of primarily fresh produce. For added protein, they eat a variety of nuts, seeds, primate chow and soy protein powder (in their a.m. smoothies). A few years ago, caregiver Debbie was able to bring some hard boiled eggs from her free range chicken friends for the chimps to enjoy. She wrote this blog about their introduction (or re-introduction) to the treat. As you will read, Foxie was completely unsure about why anyone would ever want to eat such a thing.
This summer my husband and I adopted four little red hens that get to roam happily around our spacious yard. Here’s Charlotte:
Since the chickens have come, the chimps have enjoyed hard boiled eggs about once a week for breakfast (to replace their usual primate chow).
And Foxie must have figured it out at some point, because she now seems just as excited to eat them as everyone else:

What a beautiful, uplifting and fun email. I love chickens with a passion and think Charlotte is one lucky hen, as are the chimps because there is nothing like an egg for breakfast. Thanks for making my day!

Your blog post brings joy to me every time, as you bring joy to those beloved blessed beings in your care. I love the chickens, I love the chimps, and I love you! thank you! Bless you all!

Hmmm…I am not so sure about this. Given Burrito’s cardiac issues, I hope that
chimpanzees are not as prone to hypercholesterolemia as humans are.

As a human with hypercholesterolemia :), I can tell you that a dietitian would say once a week is just fine! These days, they’re saying that it’s not so bad, and that you can have more (though who knows whether or not the egg industry paid for those studies!)

The vast majority of serum cholesterol is produced by the body, which is why folks with hypercholesteremia respond to statins. Statins block an enzyme crucial for production of cholesterol by the body. In short, eggs are good.

I remember that post of Debbie’s and Negra being so excited over seeing the eggs. Charlotte is a beauty, how nice you all enjoy her fresh eggs, even Foxie.

Man, oh man, no one can demonstrate prehensile lips like Jody, huh? Well, maybe Neggie….
I’m wondering….I’ve been trying some Caulipower pizza crusts (nope, I don’t work for them!)-they’re non GMO, gluten free…..they use cauliflower and potato starch, they come frozen……maybe some toasty pizza in the winter on cauliflower crust? I didn’t think it would be good–being Midwestern, I like thick crust pizza and almost never eat it here on the East Coast, because it’s all thin. But those are actually good……with some veggies on top–maybe soy cheese? I can say they’re crispy and tasty.

I’ve always enjoyed Foxie’s expressive eyes & facial features, but today i’m
