The lush green of summer has melted into a golden reverie. Days are still warm, but early mornings and nights are decidedly cool, sometimes even goosebump inducing. Blooms have turned to berries, seeds are scattering in the wind along with feathers from empty nest boxes, and the remaining wild families are growing, juveniles bouncing between parent and independence. Summer’s exhale.
The chimps spent a long time exploring on the hill this morning after breakfast. Longer than I’ve seen for awhile. Climbing old haunts and investigating nooks and crannies. Annie and Burrito traversed the shaky bridges and just spent time enjoying, well, their time.

Ohhhh, summers exhale — pure poetry! You have perfectly described the beauty of August in four sentences. Your photos are so lovely too, right down to the legs of two best friends sitting side by side. (I am trying to imagine the joy that would rush through me if I could sit in purple boots with Foxie right next to me on the other side of the window!!)
Katelyn, you should pull together a collection of your finest posts and publish them. Your heartfelt perspectives of the changing seasons, Young’s Hill, the chimps garden, and the chimps interactions with their natural surroundings and each other would make a beautiful tribute book, a tribute to the true meaning and beauty of sanctuary. (Proceeds could to go towards the sanctuary).

Beautiful photographs (and beautiful chimpanzees, of course). I especially love that portrait of Foxie sitting cross-legged in the greenhouse. I hope that the smoky air which I understand is permeating the Pacific Northwest can spare the sanctuary.

A beautiful post and photos, indeed! The photo of the feather blown into a plant is especially nice! Of course the photos of the chimps are the best! 🙂
