A new evening food puzzle

June 12, 2018 by Anna

Jamie is the food puzzle star of the sanctuary, and she is also the most dominant of the group, so you might notice a lot of blog posts about her working on different puzzles that we give the chimps as evening enrichment. She has a tendency to want to keep all the puzzles to herself, so we’ve been working on finding new puzzles that we can fix to different spots around the chimps’ enclosure to give some of the other chimps more opportunities to access the puzzles.

Recently, I’ve gotten several videos of some of the other (non-Jamie) chimpanzees working on food puzzles. This video was taken while Jamie is otherwise occupied with her own project to work on inside the building. Here’s Jody trying out a new shake bottle puzzle. She makes it look pretty easy, so next time I think we will need to add some shredded paper for an added challenge!

The crunching and chewing sounds woke up my dog. Very enjoyable video. 🙂

This has nothing to do with the video, but a question just came to mind. I know the chimps have blankets to make their bedding, but would they or do they have those big dog beds? Do they mind sleeping on a floor?

They would probably nest with them, but they would get ruined pretty fast and would be hard to wash. Blankets work well because they can use as many as they want to make their nests 🙂

Also we wouldn’t be able to give them the beds made out of foam. Some of the chimps might try to ingest pieces of it.

Hey now, looks as if Jody is doing all the work and sneaky little Foxie is reaping most of the rewards! ?. Lot’s of fun watching Jody work out all the healthy treats, especially when she goes for the big “straw” as an assist. Please share more of your videos Anna, such fun to watch the gang enjoying food puzzles or any of your creative enrichment toys! I could watch all day long……
