A year ago yesterday we posted this video of Jamie exploring a sandbox. Jamie takes her job as boss very seriously, and she doesn’t often sit back and kick her feet up, so to speak. But something about sifting through the sand seemed to captivate and relax her. And watching this video captivates and relaxes us.
And here’s a bonus portrait of the Zen master herself.

We try our best to take the chimps on their own terms, so I think we will continue to provide the chimps with the things that they enjoy, including boots, dolls, and human attention if they ask for it. I don’t think the sanctuary’s goal is to necessarily to help transition the chimps to their wild states, but more to facilitate them with the objects and choices they need to be comfortable and happy in their sanctuary. If new introductions cause changes in the dynamics, which I’m sure they will, we will of course let the chimps work through that on their own and adapt along side them. We do expect that along with play and grooming there will be fighting.

Pefect. This was the type of answer I was seeking, so thank-you so much for your patience whilst I worked through wording it correctly, and in a way that not only translated my meaning, but also in a way that didn’t offend long-time supporters and patrons, who firmly believe that above all else, it’s any sanctuary’s job to keep them comfortable.
Do you happen to know if ALL sanctuaries hold this same viewpoint? Or are there some that believe it’s their job to help them transition to those wild states, even if they were never raised like that? I would imagine that this is a pretty hot topic of discussion with sanctuary boards across the world, but am not sure.
Again, thanks so much.

Such great selections, I would also add all the snake videos.
They are so intense, and then also have very funny moments, like when Jamie
brings you a snake, or see’s a picture of one in a book, and gets so upset.
I think sometimes she is going for an academy award 🙂

Did I hear Katelyn say “This is for the wrong foot” only to see Jamie jester harder to try it on?! Hysterical. I feel as if you were trying to sway Jamie to the boot best suited for your walking needs but I bet Katelyn didn’t win, or did she? How long did it take for Jamie to select your boots and did they match in the end?
I also giggled at your description above the video Elizabeth. You all have the best sense of humor. Witty with enormous hearts, what a killer combination.

What fun! I really enjoyed the video. I wonder why Jamie loves boots so much.

I love this video and that music. Who needs yoga? Watching Jamie with her sand relaxes me lol

She seems to be making chewing motions as though wishing that stuff could be edible, which would be the perfect play material!
