Tea & Play

November 5, 2016 by Diana

Today’s enrichment theme was “tea party” so we took that literally and made two types of tea for the chimps to enjoy after we had finished cleaning their castle.

Post-tea time was spent on important things like diving into the nesting position, staring at a troll doll, and some lazy play with friends. Watch the video with sound.

Who can resist being thoroughly charmed by these chimpanzees?

Very nice and lazy, but who made the music?

This particular music came with the movie-making software we use.

This is just pure joy to watch! Thank you! They look so relaxed!

I love the way silly Jody was not going to give up with her invitations to play with Foxie. And it was fun to see each chimp enjoying their time individually. What a sweet video!

Silly question Diana, do the chimps ever blow on their hot tea to cool it like we do?

I have never seen a chimpanzee blow to cool a hot liquid, that’s not saying it’s never happened, of course! You can see that Foxie is taking small sips/slurps so she’s not getting a bunch of hot liquid at once. One possible reason that she chooses this over blowing on the liquid, is that Chimpanzees are not able to control their exhalation the same way that humans are, which is why they are not able to produce sounds that would lead to complex verbal language like humans. Here’s an article about it that has some annoying references to “monkeys” but explains the physiological differences: http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=129083762

This has to be one of my favorite videos. It is comforting to watch. They seem so content. I know I will enjoy watching this again and again. They are precious – just love them:). Thank you for giving them a place where they can feel so relaxed.

Glad you liked it! I admit I’ve watched it a few dozen times myself. After the third or fourth viewing I noticed another guest appearance by Missy – she is seen very briefly climbing the stairs in the background with a tall cup held in her mouth. 🙂
