The Winter’s Calm for One Chimpanzee

January 9, 2016 by Diana

I think that of all of the seven chimpanzees at the sanctuary, Annie could be described as most like a poet. She can frequently be seen in serene moments by herself, seemingly lost in thought.

Today, while I was busy filming Missy in the greenhouse, I realized that Annie had been outside for quite some time alone, so I ventured into the snow to see what she was up to.

To highlight her inner poetic nature, I found this poem to pair with the photos of Annie below:

Winter is the slow-down
Winter is the search for self
Winter gives the silence you need to listen
Winter goes gray so you can see your own colors…
~Terri Guillemets

Diana what a wonderful post. The poem is lovely. Annie looks so content out there by herself. I can’t help wondering what she is thinking:) She is such a beautiful soul.

    Perfect poem.
I’m wondering how long some of the chimps usually stay outside in the snow before they start to feel the cold.

Good question. It really depends, and usually the answer is longer than I would have thought! Jamie is determined to get her exercise in and will brave rain, wind, and cold to do so. Annie has been surprising us lately by staying out for 20 minutes in the snow, but she doesn’t appear overly cold. They’ve definitely adapted to the weather at CSNW. We do see Missy shivering when she’s eating handful after handful of snow 🙂

A beautiful poem for a beautiful girl in a beautiful setting. It is so touching to see Annie on her own, outside, peaceful and content. My how she has grown.
