It doesn’t matter to us how the chimps choose to spend their days. What matters is that they have a choice.

It is funny, we humans wake everyday and make endless choices throughout our day, never even thinking much about some of these decisions. We take so much for granted. For the Cle Elum Seven, being able to choose what they would like to do must feel like a luxury. Choice is a gift. But choice is also their right. We have deprived them of this right for decades so to see them experiencing each day in a manner they choose is something so touching I just can’t put it into words.
I hope someday very soon, all chimpanzees languishing in labs, basements, and small cages will be able to make personal choices in sanctuaries too.

I love that they have a choice now – what did Jody do today, I wonder …
