Annie’s bird noises

February 17, 2015 by Debbie

I just posted this video to our Facebook page:

Post by Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest.

Annie loves to relax on her back. Today I not only caught her making her “bird noises,” but also snapped a quick photo of her tongue sticking out a little bit—which just adds to her endearing personality.

Can you tell us what happened to her babies?

      Lorraine,

All of Annie’s babies were taken from her within days to be used for more research. Some of them have made it to sanctuary—Virgil and Mariah live at Save the Chimps in Florida. Damian lived there as well, before he passed. Tobias lives at Chimp Haven.

Her other children are either in labs or their whereabouts are unknown. Petra was last known to be at New Iberia Research Center in Louisiana, but the most recent records through FOIA on Project R&R list that she was not on the 2012 census. This could mean she was moved, but sadly, most likely means she is deceased. Our records indicate that Abby is deceased. I haven’t been able to find any information on Brooke’s whereabouts.

She really does make bird noises. Has she always done this?

I’m not sure when the first time was that we heard the bird noise, but it was very early on. She’s done it for as long as I can remember!

Oh Annie Bird. Annie’s story, her friendship with Missy, and her sweet bird songs make so special. Thank you for sharing her tragic past. I admire her courage and I am grateful she is now safe in your care.

    Questions:
Are Annie’s bird chirps unique to Annie or do other chimpanzees in captivity (or the wild) make similar noises?

Petra is Annie’s baby?! Is this THE Petra from Fauna? I know from your past blogs that Virgil and Mariah (she is beautiful just like Annie!) live at Save The Chimps, but I too am curious about where Abby, Petra, Brooke, and Damian are today. Do you know their whereabouts?

Different Petra – Fauna’s Petra was born at LEMSIP but Annie had her infants at White Sands (which became The Coulston Foundation). Annie’s Petra was moved to Alamogordo Primate Facility at the closing of Coulston, and in 2006 was transferred to New Iberia Research Center. As of 2012, her name was not on the NIRC census, which unfortunately most likely means she is deceased.

Damian is deceased but thankfully he got to live at Save the Chimps before he passed.

      Tobias is at Chimp Haven.

Sadly, Abby and Brooke are most likely deceased.

I’m not sure if other chimps make the “bird noise” – I’ve always thought it was unique to Annie. 🙂
