A different view of the forage

January 17, 2014 by J.B.

We put the GoPro camera out on Wednesday to film some of the forage. I shouldn’t be surprised by anything the chimps do anymore, but I’m still amazed at how quickly they notice that the camera has been placed in its housing. You can’t get anything past them.

They’re brilliant. It’s just like they know they’re being watched

For some reason I just knew that Annie was going to be the first to stick her finger in there! haha And Missy is amazing at that foraging, swinging from left to right to pick up those carrots! ?

As the video began I was thinking I’ll have to ask why the chimps are so “polite” and only take one carrot when so many are strewn about. Then my gal Missy strolls into the scene, munching away, and grabs everything in sight!! Way to go Missy. I also like that Jamie decided to forage first and come back to investigate the GoPro a little later — smart. Very funny overall. So much for the hidden camera idea!

Yes…impressed by how efficient Missy is! She didn’t miss a thing!

Perhaps as with most animals their hearing is so much better than ours and they could hear the camera running?

Hi Wanda – Chimpanzees’ vision, hearing, and olfactory senses are all pretty similar to our own. I chalk it up to them being more aware of their surroundings, but maybe we would notice little changes too if we lived in captive environments.

Thanks J.B. – learn something new every day – always a good thing! You’re probably right that we would notice little changes also.
I guess I assumed since dogs have such acute hearing that the chimps would too. But, dogs are not nearly as close to humans as the 7 are:) Even though I’d like to think mine are sometimes:)
        Take care
