Burrito loves food

July 16, 2013 by Debbie

You may have noticed that Burrito loves food. He’s pretty enthusiastic about anything and everything edible. When we serve meals, he bounces up and down with excitement—and for the really exciting stuff—he food squeaks so loud you can hear him throughout the building. I love that it’s super easy to make Burrito’s day because he is just so happy about food.

It might seem like a simple thing in life, but food is definitely an aspect of enrichment for captive chimpanzees. Especially after living in the labs where their options were very limited, access to fresh produce at every meal is very refreshing.

What is his favorite food.. the one that gets him so very excited?

Truly anything can get Burrito food squeaking… but probably the most exciting foods are the things that are more “treats” like frozen fruit, bread, something cooked like rice or farina, and even just fresh produce put out as a forage can get him super happy. He loves sweet potatoes and bananas especially, and isn’t a huge fan of onions but he will eat them anyway. 🙂

Burrito made me hoot! I wonder if anyone else noticed a similar loving expression (6th pic down) where Burrito is gazing at some piece of fruit and reminded me of Foxie loving on one of her trolls! Well, we do all have our various passions!

B looks serious in most of these, I suppose food is as exciting as it is serious. Does he still do his side step leg grab thing? Is often, at certain times?

He does the side-step leg-grab thing in really, really high arousal situations, so we occasionally see it. But it’s not that often 🙂
