Take Action Tuesday: Sign our petition! Retire all 110 NIH chimps

October 9, 2012 by Debbie

As we discussed last week, the National Institute of Health (NIH) recently announced that they are “retiring” 110 chimps from the New Iberia Research Center (NIRC) in Louisiana. Ten of those chimpanzees are going to Chimp Haven, a sanctuary not far from NIRC. The other 100? They are going to Texas Biomedical Research Institute in San Antonio. Though they say they won’t be used in any more invasive testing, this isn’t a true “retirement.” The chimpanzees should be going to a sanctuary like Chimp Haven or the other six members of the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance (NAPSA).

Please sign our petition to the NIH and help give these 100 chimps a retirement in a true sanctuary. Then spread the petition by sending it to your contacts via email and posting on Facebook, Twitter and other social media. Show the NIH that the public cares about chimpanzees and that we insist former biomedical chimpanzees go to true sanctuaries.

Please allow these creatures to end their lives in a caring environment. They were forced to served science, they had no choice. NOW we have a chance to thank them and perhaps give them a few years of peace before they die. It is our moral responsibility to give them what’s left of their lives back.

Not only should these chimps be set free, but the Research Center should be required to pay a substantial fee to accredited sanctuaries who are willing to provide these chimps with forever happy homes.

I care about animals and I signed the petition. Then was shown other causes/petitions I might like. I don’t believe there is a Republican war on women and I don’t appreciate that way of thinking. Is your cause only for Democrats? If so take my name off the petition.

Steve, we don’t have anything to do with the “suggested” petitions that come up after signing our petition. I assume that is something change.org has programmed. It is like the “related videos” that come up at the end of a YouTube video—not necessarily something that is chosen by the author of the video, or in this case, the petition.
