Happenings on the Hill

October 26, 2012 by J.B.

Earlier this week, Burrito did some more exploring of Young’s Hill with Jody.

Jamie climbed to the top of one of the bouncy bridge posts.

Missy and Jody played chase.

Once Missy picked up the pace, though, Jody couldn’t keep up.

The biggest news of all is that Negra ventured out to check out her cabin yesterday. Luckily Jackie and Debbie captured these photos or I would have had a hard time believing it. She didn’t make it all the way inside the cabin, but it was a big first step for her. You just never know when Negra is going to switch things up and try something new.

We’re not the only ones that get excited when the chimps do something out of their comfort zone – the other chimps get excited too. As Negra sat by the cabin, she was greeted by a parade of her friends who came by to reassure her with hugs and kisses.

Awwe, so wonderful to see her out there! Speaking of Burrito, how is he doing since his diagnosis and wondering if they’ve decided on a treatment plan for him…by all the blog posts, he looks to be doing great in spite of things and we sure hope he continues to do so!!

Burrito is doing well. He is on a combination of heart medications (the same ones used for congestive heart disease in humans) and he is responding well to them. The edema in his scrotum is way down and he has shown no new symptoms, so we are very hopeful. We’ll do some more diagnostics in the future to get more information on his illness, but we think we caught it in the early stages and therefore his prognosis is good.

Love the picture of Jamie climbing the post and Neggie sizing up her cabin. She’ll be in there in no time!

All of this is just awesome! Seeing them being out together, enjoying each other’s company and the day, learning new things, having courage to go a little farther each time – what an inspiration and the care and reassurance – we can all learn from that.

I see it’s taking less and less time to try new things. I think all the chimps have benefitted so much from Young’s Hill but I think Negra has had the most to overcome – and she’s showing she can!

Thanks JB for replying Re: Burrito’s heart situation.. I often wonder about it..but by the looks of things, re the ongoing blog posts, pics, and videos,,he looks pretty fine to me,, by the looks of things ,,its hard to tell. However, you all see first hand with your expert care, and facility, I KNOW Burrito is receiving the BEST care possible.. you all give so much to these very deserving chimps,Thanks for all you make possible for them. They are truly blessed finaly,,CSNW rocks.
