Luau!

July 25, 2012 by Jackie

Yesterday, we threw the chimps a Luau! Volunteer Steph and I have been planning it for a couple of months now and she went shopping and got so much cute stuff! There were 5 adorable pinatas (including a mermaid, a dolphin, a tiki man, a toucan, and a sun), a giant palm tree, fishing nets, leis, and tons of festive cups for tropical drinks. She went waaay over the top with this party– and it was perfect!

Over the last couple of months, I’ve been collecting all the Luau-like troll dolls and Doras too

Thankfully, the chimps were just as enriched as we were!

Burrito:

Negra:

Foxie:

Jody:

Missy:

Negra and Annie focused heavily on the peanuts in the pinatas:

Once the tropical juice was all gone, the Luau spilled out onto Young’s Hill. Jamie was so excited about the pineapple:

Foxie explored the hill and collected chow with her new Dora

Steph also brought banana blossoms, which Jody thoroughly enjoyed but Annie found one on the hill. She looked pretty proud of herself!

Thanks so much for bringing Hawaii to the chimps, Steph!

Looks like fun! My favorite is the picture of Burrito with the cup. His hair always looks so puffy. I’ve noticed some chimps are like this, do you know what causes it? Does Burrito ever display? haha Sorry I always have so many questions about the chimps. Love them all 🙂

      Hi Carissa,

No worries about asking questions! We are here to educate! 🙂

When chimpanzees are excited, their hair stands on end- which is called Pilo Erect Hair. It’s a lot like when we get goosebumps, only we don’t have the hair on our body to physically display it. 🙂 Burrito does display- usually in the mornings when the caregivers first arrive. 🙂

It’s like the 7 went on a tropical vacation without leaving home!

Jackie and Steph–Wonderful party and love the photos—you can feel their excitement just looking at their expressions. Bet there will be some tired chimps ready for bed tonight with sweet dreams. THANK YOU.

Wow, love all the colorful stuff! The only thing I could think to add is a big tiki hut, and margaritas(obviously non-alcoholic). 🙂

You guys did another great job!

I’ve been collecting stuff throughout the summer to throw a rubber duckie pool party. I’m hoping to either ship or drive over the stuff soon.
