Negra in transport cage

3 Years of Neggie

June 11, 2011 by Diana

We’ll be celebrating Negra’s birthday on Monday in addition to the anniversary of the arrival of the Cle Elum Seven to the sanctuary.

We’re not sure of her exact age, but records indicate Negra was captured in Africa some time between 1969 and 1973. She spent many, many years as a biomedical research test subject.

She has won many hearts as the “Queen” of the Cle Elum Seven, and the photos below (just a few of my favorites) show why:

Thanks again – for all of your support in giving Negra a sanctuary life!

She too, must have be so scared, wondering what was next. After being captured in the wild, probably after her family was killed to get her, she then was put into a small cage and used in so called medical research, all of which was painfull and horrifing. She spent decades in a cage and even some time in total isolation.

Today I watched Negra look up at Young’s Hill as JB was working and I also had the since she knew that some day she was going to be on that hill looking out over the valley. She wanted grass and pressed her lips to the caging to give me a kiss (in effect…. “I will give you a kiss if you get me grass) Both Diana and JB had given her (and the others) grass earlier in the day so I had to hold off on giving her grass today. She really didn’t seem to mind that she didn’t get the grass at that time and continued to watch JB and his ongoing progress on Young’s Hill.

I hope that Negra and the others KNOW that there will be no more hurt, no more needle, no more knock downs and no more tests. I hope as she looks out at Young’s Hill she is deciding which of the climbing structures will be her throne.

I love you Neggie, Happy Anniversary to you and your family.

Lovely Denice, thank you! That is also one of my biggest concerns and hopes……that the chimps KNOW, somehow, that all the horrific days are forever behind them. And how very much they are loved. Sweet Neggie…….*sigh*
