Thanks to volunteer Cari Parker, we have more enhanced enrichment puzzles. Cari’s friend Stephanie sponsored today in honor of Cari’s Birthday, so Cari sent us a box of enrichment for the occasion. Included in the box of goodies were some PVC pipe puzzles. There is a photo with an explanation in the video below.
Keeping the chimps (especially super smart Jamie) enriched is a challenge. We are always trying to come up with new puzzle ideas- and these are great! (Thanks, Cari!) If you ever have any ideas you would like to share, please email me at [email protected]
Linda (Portland, OR) says
Wow! That girl has the patience of a saint! What a great puzzle for them to work on!!
Kate says
Wow! So great to see Jamie challenged and able to figure it out in the end! Did any of the other chimps stick with it?
Anna says
Such determination! Such cleverness! 🙂
Candy (Tyler, Texas) says
Super gift, Cari! I can’t help but smile, while watching Jamie do her thing. I loved the way she turned the pipes on their side, thinking the nuts might roll out the end. I found it interesting that Foxie and Jody would taste and sniff the lock, first. I loved seeing that Annie was the first one to take a look.
Kate, I wondered the same thing, I think Jamie’s the only one with patience that would stick with it, Burrito sure wouldn’t. Do Missy or Negra ever try such puzzles? When you all put out this gift, do you show them you put nuts in it and just hang it up, or just hang it up and let them investigate it?
Jackie says
Candy and Kate-
Jamie was the only one that persevered with the puzzles. Annie did work on one of the puzzles for a while, as did Jody and Foxie (this video was not a good representation because there was so much footage), but I believe Jamie was the only one who succeeded. I suspect Missy will give it a try eventually but I haven’t seen her or Burrito or Negra work on them yet. Negra and Burrito are both less apt to try puzzles, although we have spotted both participating when no one else is around.
Re: Candy’s question about showing them the puzzles- we usually just put the puzzles out and let them figure them out on their own. We may give them hints if it seems to be too hard, but typically they will figure them out on their own. They have come to expect their evening enhanced enrichment puzzles, so they are typically looking for them when they re-enter the playroom.
Carrie says
Wow. Once she figured it out, she really seemed to moved that nut along! Do the other chimps watch and mimic her success or does each chimp continue to try to figure it out on their own?
Theresa says
Jamie has so much patience. She is not about to let any puzzle get the best of her. So smart!
Grace E. says
So incredible to watch Jamie take on the puzzle with patience and such intelligence! I most certainly wouldn’t have figured out the dang thing!
marie cross (uk) says

I’m a little behind in commenting here with several new posts but not only did she ace this puzzle, which I’m sure I wouldn’t of figured out but with the puzzle hanging on the outside of the enclosure to boot! It is an understatement to say how amazingling smart they are…especially our gal…Jamie!! 🙂
