Caregivers as enrichment

March 2, 2011 by Jackie

Let’s face it- no matter how much we do to spice up captivity with enrichment and projects, it can still get pretty boring sometimes. We try to do what ever we can to keep the chimps entertained, including simple things like drinks from the hose. The chimps have access to water 24 hours a day, but sometimes they just seem to prefer to have us “fill them up”, so to speak, instead. Chimps have prehensile lips and a large pouch in their bottom lip, so they can hold a lot of water in there! And, as always here at CSNW, they have the choice to drink or…

It’s the Boss’s privilege to go first as always, and as many times as pleases them. Good old Foxie was swallowing it so she could have more. You could see from the eye movement that Jamie was going to do something very naughty, and then to shower the camera and whoever else was near. It is good for them to be able to drink that way as well as getting it themselves when ever they want.
    Once again brilliant footage.

I see you didn’t ask permission to film Jamie….. hence the spitting.

The suspense was exciting waiting for Jamie to “share the goodies”! She didn’t disappoint!

I didn’t know that the Chimps had their canines removed. They’ve been abused so much, removing canines is probably low on their list of wrongs done to them.

Great footage! Jamie, you little hellion!

Great spitting Jamie!!!! Very well executed! And I love her at the end.. seems like she’s saying – “Really good one, right???” . When I volunteered at Chimp Eden I was able to see the chimps drinking from a hose. I never realized how wide they can open their mouths and I’ll never forget the sound. It was like buckets being filled. These beautiful creatures just amaze me.
