Jody, the 6th staff member at CSNW

February 26, 2011 by J.B.

I don’t know how this place would function without Jody. When we are shifting the chimps from one area to another and someone lags behind, Jody goes and rounds them up for us. And when a blanket gets left in the door, you can always rely on Jody to get it…at her own pace, of course. I don’t get the sense that she does it for approval; instead, I think she just likes to keep things running smoothly.

I love watching chimps help humans. Marie, I saw Sally helping Jeremy clean the floors and windows on my DVD’s of Monkey World and I couldn’t help but smile. What a clever girl she is! She even helped Jeremy feed baby Seamus by holding his cup of milk. Chimpanzees are so much smarter than many people give them credit for. Jody is a perfect example!

So do the chimps know the morning routine for cleaning etc and how do you get them to move into the rooms so you can clean (food?)

Yes, the chimps know the morning routine and the staff tries to stick to that routine as much as possible. In the morning a staff member does what ever spot cleaning may be required in the front rooms while breakfast is being prepared. The smoothie maker always gets a little excitment going. After spot cleaning and breakfast is ready a staff member will present breakfast to the group and invite them into the front rooms to be served breakfat. Most days they all come in and enjoy breakfast but there are days that one or two just are not interested in coming in. When this happens the staff just regroups and cleaning is done later in the day.

Hi Lisa – Thanks for the offer! We’ve thought about this before and decided against it for the time being. There are a few logistical challenges to doing this – 1) we don’t have good internet service at the sanctuary, so we pay dearly for using too much data over the cellular service (just like going over on your cell phone minutes), and 2) there’s no great spot that we could safely place a camera that would catch much action. Most of the time you’d be left staring at a wall 🙂 We’ll keep thinking about it though, because a number of people have requested it.

oh, that would be awesome! Let us know if it would help for us to throw money at it – (is there an amount of money the cable/phone co. would want to extend great internet service to you?) I know at first it doesn’t sound like it would benefit the chimps (so why throw money at it, etc.) but I can tell you that when something goes viral, there is no stopping the funding that flows that direction. Prospering the sanctuary (and directly benefiting the chimps) will expand exponentially when more and more people feel attached to these chimps the way we all do. Something about webcams makes that happen, in today’s voyeuristically viral way. I remember when the owl babies were being born, and it was ALL anybody could talk about. Huge. It connects us to them, and it is addictive. We can’t stop watching, we can’t stop waiting for something to happen. The secret with the camera is to have multiple cameras in multiple areas, so your viewers select which one to view. It’s addictive. Hope this can happen for you, because I think it will really benefit your bottom line, and thereby benefit the chimps directly in the end… fingers crossed.

You know, I’m not sure this is quite accurate. Isn’t Jody the 7th staff member, after Jamie your designer, engineer and quality control manager? 😉
