The Halloween / Jamie’s birthday celebration today is perhaps the biggest party we’ve had to date, and the chimpanzees were food grunting and squeaking like they’d happened upon the most exciting food they had ever seen.
Here are a few photos of the festivities:
Jamie looking through a Halloween gift bag. Thanks for all the great new toys, Robbi and Dick!
Jamie (and really everyone) enjoyed the juice in Halloween cups with Halloween straws. Thanks, Stephanie!
Jody decided to spend her time bobbing for apples in the pool we filled with water:
Burrito went around to all of the food buckets and picked out the pomegranates, squeaking the entire time. Thanks for the donation to buy produce for the party, Tamela!
Jamie opened up all of the pinatas, including this boot pinata (thanks, Felicity!), but she left some nuts behind. Here’s Negra getting what was left behind:
Foxie kept going back to this bag and peering inside, but she left it for someone else to open. Jamie finally did and Foxie got the troll doll that was in the bag:

I love the picture of Jody with her very red apple collection, I love any photos of the chimps when there’s a bright color included. Felicity, living in Texas I’ve seen a lot of boots in my lifetime but that boot pinata was ONE big boot, loved it. I like the photo of Burrito’s feet holding onto those pomegranates. To all the people who contributed to this party, here’s a pant-hoot to you.
Does Burrito still do his side-step movement when he gets excited?
I’ve seen a video where Foxie just peers into gift bags, and only once seen her pull out a doll. Any ideas on why Foxie’s so hesitant to reach into a bag?
Diana says
Burrito does still do the side-step movement, but I don’t think he did that today. Too busy looking for pomegranates?
Foxie has always been reluctant to touch enrichment and blankets. She’s getting better, for sure, but is still hesitant at times. I don’t know what’s behind her hesitation.

I was heading through town and stopped by with donations. I got there just in time to see all of the above!! What a joy it is to see these beautiful beings being so happy!! The staff and volunteers are doing such an awesome job making their lives happy. I’m so honored to be just a small part of it!! Happy Birthday, Jamie, and Happy Halloween!!! Thanks for letting me share in the fun!

Where is Annie? I hope she enjoyed the day too. Burrito is so cute. I have not seen a lot of pictures of him prior. They are so inquisitive, looking into the gift bags. Fun to see. Glad the birthday celebration was a success. I look forward to seeing more events. I am so happy these wonderful seven chimps have a great home. They deserve it. Happy Halloween too.

Annie and Missy also enjoyed the festivities. They spent most of their time up on the catwalk where it’s difficult to get photos. The forthcoming video might have glimpses of them.

Thank you again for all you do. Do the Chimps need anything special to get through the winter? How low of temperatures can they tolerate?
Diana says
We’re going to post soon a “Chimps’ Choice” request for this month, so stay tuned for that. We keep the building at a comfortable 70 degrees. Some of the chimps will go outside when it is as cold as 40, sometimes even a bit colder, but not for long. The greenhouse is going to be so wonderfu – it’s expected to be a bad winter this year.

I was priviledged to get to volunteer today and the joy and the anticipation the chimps had while we decorated was unbelievable. The pant hoots and claps and eyes at the windows and doors watching the goodies placed all around was fun to see and hear.
Then we went outside to the side doors so we could watch the festivities. As I watched the chimps undo bags, eat apples, oranges, nuts, and pomegranites I also saw the quiet peace they have come to enjoy. It seems that with each year they have built up more trust, not only with the caregivers and volunteers, but with each other. As I was watching Foxie sitting off to one corner munching a pomegranite, the only one Burrito didn’t find, Burrito strolled up. Foxie just gave him a rub on his head, as if to say hi and he looked and then moved on. Over across the way a short time before that Annie was sitting on the steps in the sun eating green onions while Negra was munching on nuts. And of course the birthday girl, Jamie was looking into everything.
Yes it was wild and crazy but there was such a peace about it. It was home and it felt so special to be a part of their world.
