Jody and her sunflower

September 28, 2010 by J.B.

Diana got some close-up footage the other day of Jody eating a sunflower from our garden. Notice how quickly Jody is able to shell the seeds with her prehensile lips.

Wonderful to see her enjoying something she loves to eat so much. How she can open the shells so quickly, amazes me everytime!

The garden has been so much fun for both humans and chimps. It’s a lot of hard work getting a garden started but the rewards have been ten fold. On Monday we were short on veggies for lunch so I went out and pick green beans, swiss chard, kale, brockley, cabbage leaves, carrots from the garden. The chimps can see us out in the garden and as soon as the first been hit the bowl they run to the doors to see what is going on and the food grunts and squeeks begin. I came in the kitchen with two large bowls of goodies and the chimps followed me in to watch as I washed their lunch (more grunts and squeeks). Elizabeth and I set up a food forage in the front rooms for lunch and things got very loud. After we set up lunch and did the saftey checks, Elizabeth opened the doors for the chimps to come in for lunch and thats where the fun for us humans begins……. it gets so quiet as they settle down to a meal. Foxie who is not really that fond of “greens” found a green bean, she reached for it, took a tenitive bite and you could see on her face the “oh well that’s rather good” look. Right there all the back aches and sore hands just went away. The garden is a big hit with the primates at CSNW……..

Oh the video of Jody enjoying the sunflower is the best part of my day( ok except for walking the dogs with my 20 year old!) But after that…. And then to read the wonderful blog is so much fun. Denice, I love your comment on Foxie. We just might get her liking veggies yet! Thanks Diana for the great video and Jody for those ever lovin lips!

Thanks for another great video. I love seeing little snippets of daily life. Jodie was really enjoying that sunflower, amazing use of her lips to get all the seeds out

I wish I could do that with sunflower seeds. I am happy to hear the chimps are enjoying the garden and the produce. There is nothing like the taste of fresh picked veggies!

Jody should consider a career in baseball.
