Oh my…. I’m so excited about Young’s Hill. There are so many people to thank (too many to list) for making this dream become a reality for th CE7. Everyone is working so hard to make this happen, donations, brain storming, supporters, volunteers, staff, Board Members. I’m so proud to be a so very small part of this organization and all the wonderful people who “make it happen” for these so very lucky chimps.
Monica says
AWESOME!!!!!!! I’m not sure what else to say, I still have tears rolling down my face.
Anna says
Pass around the tissues … the reminder of what the chimps looked like when still in their lab cages was heartwrenching. Young’s Hill is such an incredible next step in the evolution of the Sanctuary!
Is there an artist’s rendition of what the enclosure will look like? I’m trying to imagine how you’ll keep them safely inside their yard with a ‘roof’.
Anna says
Oops. Meant to say:
without a ‘roof.’
🙂
Diana says
We do not yet have an artists’ rendering, but we’re working on that. The enclosure will be two tall fences about 10 feet apart and there will be no ‘roof’ – it will be open to the sky. J.B. is working closely with other facilities in the design. We’re so excited!
Kat Morrell says
I think of how much the 7 chimp people will enjoy this big outside area. It will be exciting to watch and help make this happen.
In the long range plans, is there a possibility of taking in more chimps? Our 7 have a good life and about toget better. keep wondering about the other hundreds of chimps who aren’t in sanctuary yet.
Tamela says
I’m SO excited I can’t stand it! This was my dream for them too! I love Karen and Don Young! I don’t know them, but I know of some of the wonderful things they have done. What kind and generous people! Will you eventually be planting trees and/or other plants for the chimps? The video was so professional. Great job!
Linda (Portland, OR) says
What a great day! I got my invitation to Out of the Box and the email announcement on the same day. I too, was reaching for the tissue box when watching this video.
I can’t say anything that everyone above me hasn’t already said, but it does bear repeating to say that it is my honor and privilege to be associated with CSNW and all the amazing things you do for our chimps.
Helen Payton says
F_R_E_E_D_O_M for the seven a dream come true! A dream made possible by some generous chimp lovers and all that donate to the seven. I feel the Youngs would consider all who paticipate are philanthropists of the highest order who care for these very dear creatures in so many ways. Hooray for the Youngs, Hooray for the Chimps. Can’t wait to see them roaming in the pasture.
Helen Payton says
Fantastic video – you guys rock!! am sending out far and wide. xo
Julie Harding says
I’m crying too….and can’t wait to see the funds that are raised at the auction!!!! This WILL happen for our CE7 and I’m so proud to be a part of it!!!
Peter Cross (uk) says
An excellent video and I am sure this will be a big step that will be achieved and the CE7 will benefit greatly from this. The auction will raise a lot to go towards it. It will take a lot of thought and work to plan it but…. It reminds me of Field Of Dreams “If you build it,they will come” and they will and they’ll enjoy every second.
Once again all at CSNW you are showing your devotion to the chimpanzees by giving them what they need. Your media awareness is second to none, and you promote it very well. Its all a matter of getting your message out to people and you do that perfectly.
All the best to you all.
Margaret and Karen says
LOVE it! Cannot wait to see our Seven running and playing on Young’s Hill. My heart quivers just to think of it. The video is fabulous. Are you planning to have it running at the auction? Love ALL the primates at CSNW.
Theresa says
Many thanks to Don and Karen Young for their continued generosity. I haven’t met them either but they obviously love chimps which makes them good people. This video brought tears to my eyes. To see them enjoy an outdoor area without bars when they look up at the blue sky will be absolutely awesome. More room for Missy and Annie to chase each other and the others to enjoy as well. Making this dream come true will be another milestone for CSNW. You are all wonderful! The chimps are so lucky Keith read that article and so blessed to have each of you and the volunteers that love them so much!
J.B. says
Kat – Young’s Hill is being built specifically for the seven. Unfortunately, the size of the indoor enclosures at CSNW limits the number of chimpanzees we can provide sanctuary to, so this new enclosure will not allow us to take in any more chimps in the immediate future. But part of our overall vision, in addition to improving the lives of the seven, is to provide a template for spacious and effective housing for chimpanzees at a lower cost. This would be a huge step toward providing a home for all of the chimpanzees needing sanctuary now and in the future.
Tamela – The majority of the plantings will be bamboo. BooShoot Gardens is donating multiple varieties, and the different groves will provide shade, nesting material, and places to play. But we will probably plant some other species as well, such as fruit trees. Because our summers are so dry (we are in a high desert climate), any new plantings will require irrigation, which limits the types and quantity of vegetation we can plant.
As soon as out artist’s rendering of Young’s Hill is complete, I will post a more detailed description of our plans. But in the meantime, feel free to ask questions in the comments section so I can be sure to answer them in my post.
Anna says
JB – the video says something about the “Fund-an-Item” opportunity to contribute, but I don’t see that described anywhere on the Sanctuary web site yet? Will that be a separate initiative? Can you tell us anything about it?
Diana says
Hey Anna – I can answer that. I will add something about that on our event page.
The Fund-an-Item is part of the live auction where people raise their paddles to make donations towards a specified project. This year it is Young’s Hill.
We raised $10,500 for the greenhouse during last year’s Fund-an-Item at the auction. We’re aiming to top that amount this year!
For those at a distance who will not be attending the auction, we are working on setting up an online auction with the Fund-an-Item included, so people can chose to make a (tax deductible) donation that way. I hope to have details about that soon – it’s still in the works.
Lynette says
Hi there, Firstly, I just want to say that what you have achieved is marvellous! It’s really heartening to read about primates being given a decent life, albeit in captivity. We here in South Africa are at a crossroads with regards to our Chacma baboons. A new protocol has recently been promulgated, in which all dispersing males and habitual house raiders are trapped and then killed. The authorities have not been prepared to look at other options and the baboons are disappearing right under our noses. It has dire consequences for troop structures and we animal activists are determined to put a stop to it. One of the ways we are doing this, is to gain public support through our online baboon petition. If any of your supporters would like to add their names to this worthy cause, then please go to: http://www.gopetition.com/petitions/stop-the-culling-of-cape-towns-baboons.html and make a difference. Thank you for caring.
