Update on Alamogordo chimpanzees

July 27, 2010 by Diana

Please see our July 16th post, Chimpanzees to be moved for research, for the background information on this story.

Fifteen chimpanzees have already been moved from the Alamogordo Primate Facility (APF) to the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research in Texas, but we cannot give up. The chimpanzees need us to speak out for them.

New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson has issued a press release asking the NIH to permanently retire all of the APF chimpanzees, return the 15 chimpanzees that have already been sent to Texas and convert the Facility into a sanctuary.

The Humane Society of the United States (HSUS) has made it easy for everyone to contact the NIH about this urgent issue. Please see the HSUS action alert, take action and share with your friends today.

You can keep updated on the campaign to retire the APF chimpanzees by following Animal Protection of New Mexico on their website and their Facebook page.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE take a moment and go to the HSUS acition alert above. The HSUS already has a letter that all you need to do is sign and provide your name & address, etc. Instructions read: “Fill in and submit the form below to ask Secretary of Health and Human Services, Kathleen Sebelius, to halt the transfer of these 202 chimpanzees and provide them with the sanctuary they deserve. Please remember to be polite and professional, and to personalize the subject line and text below so your message stands out”. You can use their verbiage or add your own. We have to save our chimps!!

Thank you for posting this information to help get the word out. Very important that we speak up for the chimps.

Thank you for posting this update, Diana. I will be contacting them this week and passing this post on to family and friends. Will you do another update again, soon? I think sometimes people get busy, and need to be reminded because I know that all of the blog readers really do truly care. Get writing people!

Marie – I think bringing light to the situation and letting them know how many people are aware of what is taking place is vital. So, I don’t think it matters that you are in the UK. I would write anyway!

This makes me soooo angry!!! Linda is right, the HSUS action alert is very easy to use. You can personalize it so its not just another form letter. Its also nice to see Governor Richardson from New Mexico is urging their release to sanctuary as well! We can’t give up!

Now is the BEST time to speak up LOUD AND CLEAR for the Alamogordo Primate Facility chimpanzees — thank you Chimp Sanctuary NW for posting and thanks to everyone for sharing with compassionate friends. Flo turns 53 this year and the thought of her entering into a lab is terrifying. We’re not giving up in New Mexico!

Thank you to everyone who has contacted their representatives and the NIH. Laura is so right – we need to speak up now and we need to do it loudly. Marie – I agree with Felicity that it wouldn’t hurt at all for you to contact the U.S. federal government. It’s embarrassing that we are so behind other countries on this issue, and it’s good to point this fact out. Felicity – yes, I will certainly send out reminders and updates.
