Jody and Missy play

April 26, 2010 by Jackie

As we’ve mentioned in previous blog posts, Jody doesn’t play too often. But every once in a while, we’ll catch her playing with someone, which is a real treat. Even then though, it’s often a very mellow kind of play… Today, however, Missy got her going, resulting in a full-fledged play session. Notice how Jamie tries to steal their thunder towards the end… very “Jamie-like”, if you ask me. 🙂

It’s always so wonderful to see these chimps happy and at play. Thanks, Jackie!

I couldn’t believe that was Jody playing with Missy. I’ve never seen that much action from Jody before, wonderful to see. I think Missy could get a tree stump to play with her, she’s a special girl.

It is very enjoyable to see the chimps enjoy each others company. Would like to see more of Annie (my pal) Very happy to have found your site and hope you can always help these chimps.

    Yet another great video.
I have a question about the chimps’ pink parts. Sometimes that area is quite pronounced and swollen and sometimes it is more recessed. You mentioned in another post that they go through reproductive cycles when their parts swell or diminish. How long is it between cycles for chimps? Do they go through menopause like humans? About what age? I know that Burrito has had a vasectomy…but does he get frisky with the females? Delicate questions perhaps…but inquiring minds want to know.

Kat – chimpanzee cycles are about 35 days. From what I’ve read, menopause is not seen in chimpanzees. Some researchers believe this is because chimpanzees lifespans are shorter than humans and chimps die before menopause would set in, though some chimpanzees have given birth at pretty advanced ages (in their 50s). In the Cle Elum Seven group Negra, Missy and Foxie do not cycle. We know that Missy and Foxie had hysterectomies shortly before coming to the sanctuary. We do not know why Negra does not cycle. We’ve seen sex between Burrito and Jamie just once. It’s not uncommon for captive chimpanzees to seem to not really “get” what to do probably because they were not exposed to sexual behavior as they would be if they had grown up in a social group.

that Missy.. yeah, she is a special girl & does have a very special way about her (as do all of ’em have their own special ways!)
that turn of Missy’s head and her pause there for a moment when Jamie first enters the picture is interesting… wonder what she was thinking right then.. I don’t know but it looked like she might’ve been thinking along the lines of “uh-oh, hope everything’s OK” – ha!
