We decided it would be fun to celebrate April Fools’ Day with the chimps today. While we didn’t throw a full-fledged party, we did try to switch things up and do some wacky, unpredictable stuff. To start, we served dinner for breakfast. (Their traditional breakfast of smoothie and fresh fruit will be served for dinner, of course.) Negra, especially, loved the rice with apple puree in flour tortillas, and everyone was beside themselves when we brought out night bags at the end of the meal! Later, we thought we’d take a midmorning nap with the chimps. While Burrito thought playing was a much better idea, Jamie came over right away and enjoyed some quiet time with us.
As I write this, Jackie and volunteer Pam are preparing a dinner (or breakfast?) of banana smoothie, pears, oranges, and peanut butter waffles, and the chimps are keeping an eager eye on the process through the kitchen window. The Cle Elum Seven’s first (celebrated) April Fools’ Day seems to have been a success!

What a clever idea for April Fools’ Day, I enjoy having breakfast for dinner sometimes. Those peanut butter waffles sound um, um good!

That is so great! I am sure the chimpanzees loved it!!

LOL – how cute! 🙂
It’s really nice to know that the chimps are secure enough in their world that a little confusion (pleasant confusion, but nonetheless …) can be *enjoyed*!

Peanut butter waffles?! The chimpies are living the good life for sure!

I’m so glad there are people like you in the world. I love that you include them in our human holiday celebrations. I know they don’t understand what April Fool’s day is or what are birthdays, but I do know is that they can understand the love and kindness that you show them every day. You make ammends (even though other humas were the ones who caused them pain) and try to repair the damage. Everyone at the sactuary has the best intentions at heart and it shows. Thank you for all that you do for them and sharing it with us.

Oh I loved the idea of napping with them!! But I think you need lessons on nest making LOL! I agree with all the other comments. You all are wonderful and loving when it comes to thinking up ways to show the chimps you care, and this was no exception. Way to go! Thanks for the blog Elizabeth. (and Jackie)

You all are great! I love the idea of napping with the chimps. Did Negra demand a night bag at night? I know they are her favorite.

Awww, love the naptime. I have a feeling the chimps enjoyed the bonding as well. They know who is looking after them and definitely respond happily when they see their caretakers. Happy hoots to you all!
