Sun, how we’ve missed you!

February 17, 2010 by Elizabeth

The sun has finally returned to central Washington! Today was gorgeous, with blue skies, temperatures in the high 40s, and lots of glorious sun. The beautiful weather has put all of us, human and chimpanzee, in great moods. The chimps spent much of the day playing, swinging, and laughing outside in their (very nearly completed) greenhouse.

Oh how I wish I had some of that energy!! They sure are having a great time – you can even hear the laughing. I can’t quite make out what’s making the noise at the end – it was so unexpected!!

I’m with you Gayle, I wish I had their energy. I do believe that’s the fastest chase I’ve ever seen. I was so intent on watching the clip that it took me a second to realize their was someone outside of the enclosure, it looked like Diana.

Sunshine on their shoulders makes them happy for sure! What great play! I love the speed of the play and the chimp giggles.

After a *very* long and complicated day, this video made me laugh right out loud. They’re having so much fun!!! Do you have a thermometer out in the enclosure? Do you have any idea what the tempertaure gain is with the panels up?

No doubt, it’s taken more effort than you originally anticipated to build this enclosre – it must be so rewarding to see the chimps enjoy it!

    Kudos. 🙂

Oh my goodness!!!…..what an honor to watch the fun and frolick and hear their laughs of joy! Thank you for sharing this day with us!! I would also be interested in knowing what difference the panels make. I understand they’re not all up yet but it must make a difference. Next winter will be so different for the seven! My $100 was well worth the cause….I wish it could have been more. Looking forward to Sipping For The Seven next month!

P.S. I love seeing adult chimpanzees pirouette, Foxie’s become very adept at it. I’ve noticed that Foxie always dismounts, backwards, from a bench or the deck, do the others do the same?

ahh, this is one of those videos that really brings it home, as it epitomizes and encapsulates everything that CSNW is doing and providing for them – among many things – giving the opportunity for them to simply be chimps – runnin’, climbin’ and rascalin’ around with eachother. bravo to everyone at CSNW.

Anna & Julie – We don’t have a thermometer out there yet, but you can feel the difference already. At this point it’s mostly due to the walls blocking the wind.

Candy – Diana and I were just talking about that the other day. Chimps tend to dismount facing backwards, like Foxie (they also tend to walk down stairs backwards or sideways – try going downstairs face-first on your hands and knees sometime and you’ll see why!). Missy, as usual, is the odd one. She loves to jump face-first.

Great video. I was also wondering what the noise was at the end. It sounded like one of those horns everyone gets for New Years. It is so much fun watching them frolic in the sun.
Candy, without you pointing it out I did not see a caregiver on the outside. After reading the blog I went back to check it out. Good observation!!
I love the twirls and laughing!!

I never get tired of watching them play – swinging from the roof and chasing each other around the playroom. I’d still love to see a “chimp cam” in there one day.
