New view

October 27, 2009 by Diana

The chimpanzees got to check out the new window today. The window replaced an extra door that went from the playroom to the outdoor area. J.B. still had some work to do on the outdoor area side, so we went out to say hello to the chimps through the window. In the meantime, the Poppoff crew was still hard at work in the mud (but no rain today) getting things ready for the foundation that will be part of the greenhouse structure going over the outdoor area. Workin workin again!

Jamie, of course, was the first to inspect the window

Jody was also very curious

It’s difficult to see, but Jamie and J.B. are “touching” hands through the glass in the photo below

For context – here is a zoomed-out view. The new window is to the left, the chimp door that we use from the playroom to the outdoor area is to the right. The two windows on top are just above the catwalk in the playroom.

Foxie likes the new window too

Many of the chimps watched J.B. working all day. Below is Jamie making sure J.B. is doing a good job (or maybe seeing how things come apart!)

Oh – that picture of JB and Jamie touching hands (across glass) is so sweet!!!

And I imagine how all this activity is just hugely interesting to the chimps. Work for humans as a form of entertainment for chimps! LOL – good stuff all around.

I think I’m more excited than the chimps are of the new view and all the construction. I can’t wait to see it first hand.

I’m sure this is the first time in the chimps lives that they have looked through something other than caging. It must be strange, confusing and even odd. Won’t be be great when some of the window caging is replaced with glass so they can see the valley without caging.

Many, many thanks to all who have contributed to this multi-faceted project.

Thanks for the update, Diana! It’s fun to see them being so curious & interested in all the construction. 🙂 There is always something interesting going on at the sanctuary to keep their minds busy…you guys are the best for taking such good care of them & always coming up with new projects to make their lives better!

Great pictures Diana! J.B. and Jamie hand to hand is priceless. It’s fun watching them checking things out and seeing what their humans are up to. I can’t wait to see the finished greenhouse. Is there a plan to replace more caged windows with the new glass?

Theresa – yes! Thanks to a generous corporate donation which should come through soon, we will be able to replace some of the caged windows with glass in the Spring and provide the chimps with views without bars.

Great news, Diana! I look forward to seeing the bars replaced with glass so the chimps can view the valley. Thank you all for keeping us involved in their lives. It’s a daily treat for me to read the blog. It never fails to bring a smile to my face. Can you tell I love chimps? LOL
