Laughter

October 20, 2009 by Diana

The seven chimpanzees living at CSNW are the most playful group I’ve ever met. You would think they were kids the way they play and laugh. As all of you who follow the blog know, Foxie in particular has a kid-like disposition (at least she does now that she’s in sanctuary!) Jamie, on the other hand, can often be very serious. But Foxie is able to bring out the kid in Jamie too, as you’ll see in the video below.

One interesting thing that we’ve observed is that the chimpanzees seem to play wrestle more in the front rooms than any other location within the building. Perhaps it feels like a more private location for wrestling?

Nothing better than a good old “belly laugh”…………..

Is that a new doll? I hope Doris, if she’s still together, doesn’t get jealous.

You know it’s great that Foxie’s showing Jamie that you don’t have to be serious all the time. I loved Jamie’s smile, it just changes her look so much. When the play slaps came along, I flinched and they didn’t, amazing strength they have.

I don’t know how else to get a message to this blog group, so I’ll leave it as a comment here. The following message came to me on my Facebook page. I am a Facebook ‘fan’ of the MONA Chimpanzee Rescue Center, and they sent this message:

    Martha’s rescue on animal planet

Please watch animal planet tomorrow (Oct 21st) at 8pm to see Martha’s rescue and her journey to her new home at Chimp Eden in South Africa.

Reminds me of an old album, I’m dating myself “Pretzel Logic”!!! It’s remarkable all the limbs end up with the right person! I wonder if it’s something about confinement keeping the wrestling contained that keeps them in the front rooms??

I’m laughing along right with them. All those arms and legs! No wonder they’re having so much fun – wouldn’t you if you discovered how fun life could be with some room to roll around and someone to roll around with?

I laughed so hard watching this! I love hearing them laugh. They are happy to be in a better place and they are showing it.
Edie, Martha’s rescue is only showing in the UK. Escape to Chimp Eden Second Season has ended in the US. I visited Chimp Eden last month and Martha, although it took 2 months to get her to go outside, is happy and enjoying her new family after being in isolation for 13 years. She is a beautiful chimp that has a special relationship with a 2 year old named Lilly. Martha has come such a long way since she decided to go outside and enjoy the outdoors. What was so sad is that she didn’t know what grass was and when she went out the first time it freaked her out. Then she got shocked by the fence and reverted back to the isolated chimp staying indoors alone. Now she plays with the babies and enjoys the trees. It was very heartwarming to see. She is very protective of the little ones and will play with them for long periods. Chimp Eden has done for her what CSNW has done for the Cle Elum 7. Martha is lonely no more.

Maybe they like the smaller rooms because they use all their energy for wrestling and not for sliding or chasing across the room.

    Edie, Theresa, and all –

It’s always so heartwarming to hear and see other stories of chimpanzees transforming after getting to sanctuaries.

One place to talk about everything chimp-related is the Chimp Sanctuary Supporters network. Posting there ensures that the conversation is not lost on a comment on this blog. Theresa’s posted photos from her visit to Chimp Eden! Here’s the link to the network: http://chimpsanctuarynw.ning.com/

SUPER VIDEO!!! We love the new video editing technology. Guess that is what it is called. Also, fabulous filming of the tangles and laughs of Foxie and Jamie playing. What bliss to see it and to see them so relaxed and happy. Thank you. Thank you.
