Tool use

September 3, 2009 by Elizabeth

Today after lunch Jamie spotted a slice of onion that had fallen on the human side of the caging, and grabbed a hose and a pair of sunglasses to help pull it closer.

While I was watching it, still wondering if she was going to get it (I was pretty sure she would), I felt like I was watching a Super Bowl game and we needed to just kick a field goal with only 3 seconds on the clock!! And then she got it and the football soared right through the goal post!!

This was wayyyyyyyyy better than watching the football game though!!

That was fantastic! I found myself wondering if she was going to get it and realized I was holding my breath. Thank you Elizabeth and Jamie for the exciting video.

Success! It was so fascinating watching her process this – bending the sunglasses to extend their reach. I am so fascinated by their complex and so-human like minds. Jamie sure is a smart gal!

That’s pretty amazing – you can almost hear the wheels turning in her head. Thanks for sharing!

Wonderful to see that from beginning to end. Anyone who does not understand that chimpanzees are intelligent, self aware, problem solving individuals should just watch this video.

I like how she didn’t ask, motion or imply that she needed your help

the best for me was at the end – as she popped it in her mouth
she looked up at you and gave you a swift up-head nod as if to say “see, I got it!”

good one Jinny .. amen Margaret & Karen

Jeannie – I was doing the same thing!! I felt victorious when she got it and popped in her mouth. I wanted to give her a round of applause. I also realized that Jamie is a better “technical” problem-solver than me. I would never have thought of using the sunglasses. Strong work Jamie!!
