Missy’s birthday

August 23, 2009 by Elizabeth

We partied it up today in celebration of Missy’s first birthday in sanctuary. Thanks so much to everyone who sent donations or happy thoughts to the birthday girl! The chimps (and humans!) had a pretty fabulous day.

What a great birthday party! It looked like everyone had such a good time. And Elizabeth, thank you for the wonderful video!! It was so nice to have a long one. The chimp sounds were a delight to listen to. As well as the adults laughing in the background. Thanks again for the video. Happy Birthday sweet Missy.

What a wonderful video! Loved hearing all the chimps excited vocalizations! They were so eager to see what goodies were there. What a great party! Happy Birthday, beautiful Missy! Thanks, Elizabeth for a longer video. Can’t get enough of the 7!

Elizabeth! Elizabeth! WOW WOW! You have really excelled yourself and are raising our expectations to a new level! One hundred thousand thanks for bringing the party right to us. What a great party it was. We thought the frozen watermelons were brilliant. It was so nice to see the video. It has been to long since we have seen our chimpanzee friends in person. What wonderful family members they are. Karen and Margaret

How in the world did Missy know how to properly shuck corn, even brushing the silks off!!!! Wow! I’m so happy she shared with Negra too. I have a soft spot for her. My man, Burrito, you get that watermelon!

What a great day for the 7!

Negra’s request for corn was SO cute! And I echo MS’s question: how did Missy learn to shuck corn so efficiently??

And I gotta ask – why freeze the watermelons?

Looks like a great party. 🙂

How in the world could I possibly pick a fave part of this video?? I forced myself and it had to be the corn shuckin’ & sharin’!! Such a great party. Do you do “people” parties too??

**Elizabeth** The best video!! I really liked how you had the intro shots each time the video changed chimps. I’m still learning their facial features and sometimes don’t know who-is-who.

    Great job everyone!!

I don’t know HOW Missy learned to shuck corn so well, but she is pretty awesome at it.. it’s serious business!!
We froze the watermelons because it would take the chimps longer to eat it (and it’s a cool treat!). Keeping captive chimps (or any captive animal) entertained is always a challenge. No captive environment can ever replicate the complexity of the wild, therefore it’s our job to “mix it up” as much as possible and try to prevent boredom from setting in. Same with the coconuts… it kept everyone busy all day, which is “totally awesome, dude”. ha ha… I couldn’t resist.
With the exception of Missy’s excellent corn shucking skills and sharing with Negra, I have to say Burrito’s food squeaks when eating the watermelon has got to be one of my favorite moments of the video! Now THAT is a happy chimpanzee!!!!

What a great video. It has been said by several viewers but I must repeat how amazed I was at Missy’s corn shucking and particularly the removing of the corn silk. Loved her sharing

You are doing great work. Keep it up

    Jackie,

I agree with you on Burrito’s squeaks. I heard the squeaks but didn’t see Burrrito’s mouth move so I thought someone else as squeaking. My actual thought was “WOW! Someone squeaks just like Burrito. I wonder if he taught them?” LOL I wish I had a recording of his squeaks to play when ever I needed a lift.

My favorite part of the video was ALSO when Missy peeled the corn and shared a second ear with her buddy. I watched the video a few times, just to make sure – BUT I think that the sharing part was somewhat under protest.

What a great video!!! And nice, fancy, camera work – I love it!!!! I didn’t realize it was Burrito squeaking when he was eating the watermelon. Thanks, Elizabeth, for pointing that out. He sounds like a puppy! I’d say my favorite part was Negra asking for corn and Missy sweet enough to share. Happy Birthday Sweet Girl!

This is so great. And Missy and I have the same birthday! That really makes me happy. And I too loved watching her shuck corn and share it.
