The volunteers at CSNW have been busy lately! On Saturday, a large group of volunteers turned out to help clean up the property and to begin planting grass, shrubs and wildflowers. Dakota, our garden and compost master, and Jackie, our newest caregiver, have been working hard to get the garden beds ready for planting vegetables. Right now there are seven raised beds. The plan is for the chimps to each have their own garden containing their own favorite vegetables. I was too busy (and forgetful) to take pictures of the volunteers on Saturday, but I did manage to get a couple of Dakota and Jackie and the new gardens. Many thanks to everyone that has helped get this place in shape for spring.

I love that each chimp will have his/her own garden! lol. THAT is service!

OK I’m curious. Will they get to work in their garden or just partake of the harvests?

What a wonderful idea. Organic veggies from their own garden! How about fruit like watermelon? Is that anyone’s special favorite or do they all love it? As usual you all have gone the extra mile for the chimps…Thank you! They deserve being treated special and you always give them that.

LOL- Trying to manage the chimps working in a garden would be more fun than trying to organize a holding tank of Capuchin and Rhesus monkeys. I could imagine dirt being thrown around, a hoe or two getting fought over, a couple of the chimps wearing fertilizer/soil bags on themselves, a few dirty troll dolls, and at least one of them making a nest and falling asleep directly in the middle of one of the others plots…
I believe that CSNW will be planting vegetables that each chimp favors in the separate plots.

Woohoo! I’m so glad to see gardens going in! I know it will take a while to get the rythm down, but the opportunity to grow fresh goodies for the CE7 will be hugely rewarding! Next step – hoop houses to go over those beds to extend the growing season! 🙂
It looks to me like the beds are in a location where the chimps can see them – yes? I have this mental image of the chimps watching the gardening processes, figuring out what’s going on in those beds, and getting all excited when they observe sanctuary staff harvesting …

Hey econobiker I love the imagery you put forth and yes I do agree that it would be hard to do. I just thought I would throw it out for laughs. Maybe someday the chimps can have a plot in their outdoor area, minus the hoes.
