Dancing with Negra

April 18, 2009 by J.B.

Negra loves to watch us dance. Usually we initiate the dancing, but yesterday, as Diana was walking past the front rooms, Negra clearly indicated that she would like to be entertained. So we obliged! As we started dancing, Negra came down from her bed and danced along with us in her own special way.

Jamie sometimes disapproves of us having too much fun with the other chimps, as you can tell from her scowl in this video. Thankfully, she chose not to spit on us this time.

The fun at CSNW is so enjoyable to watch. Negra obviously loves this interaction. She is a lovely dancer!

It’s so good to see Negra interacting, she’s been kind of quiet and reclusive in the past and I hope this is just a taste of what she will show us in the future.

At the half way point in the video she clearly is asking for more dancing and even added a kiss. Thank you for entertaining her as well as us on the blog.

Beloved Negra, you go woman! How fantastic to see you blooming with the spring! Amazing what a difference a year of sanctuary has made for you. We rejoice in your increasing “awakening”. How beautiful you are. How wonerfully you express yourself. You are such a big part of our hearts. We love you.

I have had many older relatives over the years and have sometimes spent time entertaining them similarly. The looks on Negra’s face and her body movements are so similar to some of my family, I know they had a good time when I entertained them, so did Negra!

Go Negra go!!!! She sure is enjoying herself. And the look on Jaime’s face is priceless!!! Thanks for sharing. Oh…and when do we get to see the dancing???

That is wonderful. I loved Negra keeping up with the beat with her hands on the floor and her bobbing head. Jamie is such a kook! She definitely put a crescendo on the last dance step with her one pound on the bars.
I’m curious, what did Negra do to show you she wanted to be entertained? That is so neat. I agree with the others… what a difference 10 months has made. I’m really looking forward to the 2nd year and all the fun things we will see.
    Thanks JB

I love seeing Negra finally coming out of her shyness. But Jamie’s reaction is funny too – she wants to get all the attention from the humans. I’m sure this is a real compliment to the wonderful way you take care of them!

Jeani – when I walked by, Negra looked at me, nodded her head (which is a chimpanzee greeting, as you know), but also removed the blanket from her head and rhythmically pounded her closed fist against the bed a few times. Because she does this sometimes when we dance, I took it to mean that’s what she wanted.

Thanks Diana. I’m glad to hear that you are so sensitive to the chimps movements. It is a great video to watch. You sure get your exercise!!

I think you should market this video as “Dancing with the Chimps” as an exercise video. I love watching Miss Negra loosening up, she’s really enjoying herself. I couldn’t help but chuckle at the dance steps, sounded like “clogging.”

It’s amazing, what a clear desire for musical rhythm, and makes me wonder:
    Where’s the music?
Do you guys ever talk to them when you dance? Seems awfully quiet!
Please try it and make more videos!!! Or dance with them!

I watched the video 3 times just to make sure and yep, she was totally keeping the exact beat of your feet, with her head!! Great job!!

What a great way to stay in shape — dancing for the chimps! I love the way Negra is bobbing her head in time with the steps.
