Why are you moving the animals to a cold snowy climate? It looks like they will be housed entirely indoors. It would seem to me that the animals would hate this.

    Hi Concerned Citizen,

We do have an outdoor area for chimpanzees – it is about 2/3 of the way done now, and will be completed shortly. It’s very important to us to provide the Buckshire Seven with access to the outdoors because they have not had this for most or all of their lives.

It is true that the chimpanzees are moving to a relatively cold climate in Cle Elum, although it is much sunnier on “this side” of the mountains. We expect that they will be able to have at least some access to the outdoors for most months out of the year. The indoor area has radiant floor heating and many windows, so even when it is too cold to open the doors to the outside, the chimpanzees can be comfortably warm indoors and exposed to sunlight.

There are so many chimpanzees in need of rescue and sanctuaries are needed all over the country. We were able to buy a piece of land fairly inexpensively and build the chimp house with volunteer help, which allowed us to keep expenses down and rescue the chimpanzees much sooner than if we had spend a great deal of money on land and construction in other parts of the country. There are other successful chimpanzee sanctuaries in cold climates, and some in very warm climates where the apes have the opposite issue of dealing with extreme heat.

It’s a very good question, and I appreciate your concern!
