If you haven’t seen this video put together by the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine, with footage taken by Jonathan Houser of the chimpanzees being released onto Young’s Hill, watch it below.
The chimpanzees are the stars of the video, in our opinion, but you might spot a Hollywood star or two as well. There is certainly momentum building for ending the use of chimpanzees in research, and we hope that the Cle Elum Seven can continue to serve as an example of why chimpanzees should be permanently released to sanctuaries.
Biological Anthropologist Barbara King shared the video on the NPR website earlier today.

Wonderful!
It broke my heart to see the anesthetized chimpanzees in the laboratory, and thinking that’s what our girls (and guy) had to go through. But the clips of Young’s Hill made me realize that everyone HAS to feel this sadness – and then feel the joy of the chimps out in the open on Young’s Hill, in order for the compassion to swell to the tide that will carry this Congressional Act to passage.

People really are listening to what they are hearing about the GAPA. I get asked about it frequently and that is something I will get on the soap-box for anytime!
I got an email from my Senator (Jeff Merkly – Oregon) last week, thanking me for my concerns and telling me that he is actually one of the Senators on the committee for the GAPA.
If you haven’t already let your Congressman know how important this is, please do it now. Here’s the link,

We have to save these amazing creatures that we all love so dearly.

Very well done, let’s hope we get a groundswell of more support, more letters, more advocacy and more outrage at the US being one of the last countries to still perform cruel and invasive testing on great apes. It is my biggest new years wish that this bill will be passed into law in 2012.

I took a primate behavior class with Barbara King in college- she’s a wonderful advocate and a gifted teacher. I’m so glad that this video continues to make the rounds- it’s an amazing testiment to both the lives of the chimps and to what the will of a strong group of people can do once they put their minds to it.
