Thief: The Game

March 31, 2026 by Chad de Bree

One of my favorite times of day is when I arrive to the Chimp House in the morning. Usually I’m one of the first humans in to get a jump start on the day. It’s a pretty serene moment in time first thing in the morning. Most of the chimps are already awake, bright-eyed and bushy tail(less), while others are just waking up. It’s at this time in the morning you can catch the chimpanzees engaged in some grooming sessions, mall walking, or playing some kind of silly game.

The other day, as I walked in and turned on the security monitors, I noticed Lucky in the Oakwood Greenhouse rolling around with a sock. She seemed pretty content, then Rayne arrived. Rayne was determined to get Lucky’s sock. From there a game of theft, chase, and keep away ensued. What started with just a sock cascaded into what seemed to be a treasure trove of stolen goods. Ok. Really it was two, maybe three things, but that’s still two or three more that should be stolen, right?

Who do you think was the masterful thief of this game?

What a fun game of Thief, Chad. It seemed as though the chimpanzees were thoroghly enjoying themselves in this game that had rules of its own.
    I totally enjoyed this!

Good to see The Great Apes getting love.
When Gordo walks by at the beginning, you can see what gives him that distinctive walk. he’s lifting his toes off the ground. I always knew there was something different about the way that guy walks! And Lucky didn’t seem too distressed about the sock, because there were others on the platform in the next room and she just ignored them. I hope it didn’t disturb her so badly that she got into her blanket car and drove off. I hope she was just on a coffee run.

I burst out laughing seeing Rayne wearing her pilfered sock! Missy would approve of their love of fashionable (and warm) footwear!

This was hysterical. I was laughing so hard at Lucky and Rayne running around with one sock on and how it became such a prized possession. I just love that they are always coming up with something new!!! Never a dull moment.

What a fun game, Chad! Really had me chuckling. I love the different techniques of sock wearing. Lucky was happy to have it just covering her toes and top of her foot thus making it very easy for Rayne to snatch it off her foot. Rayne, knowing how easy it is to slip a sock off of the toes chose to carry the sock. (or so it appeared to me on my phone) When I saw Terry with the sock all the way up over his ankle I laughed so hard. I could just see the captain bubble over his head saying “I dare you to try to pull this off my foot.” What a silly game.

And I see why that one platform is so popular. It appears to receive the first splash of morning sunlight. It was sweet, seeing everybody, one by one, join in with Lucky to absorb the warmth.
