Mave Conquers the Bray

March 16, 2026 by J.B.

I could tell that Mave was working up to something big. For months, she’d wait to catch my eye and then shuffle swiftly (this is Mave’s fastest speed) towards the Bray. And as soon as she’d exit the chute, she’d make a beeline straight up the hill. I would join her on the other side of the fence, but to be honest, I’d kind of given up on the idea that she’d make it to the top. She just couldn’t get past that one spot.

But never underestimate Mave, or any chimpanzee for that matter. Maybe now she’ll teach her friend, Dora, to appreciate all the Bray has to offer.

What an, inspirational video! And, the, music, accompaniment was aprropriate, and, joyful. So proud of Mave. She is adorable! Was it a slice of pineapple she was eating?

The top (or the bottom) of the pineapple! :yum:

Oh, the accomplishment and the floof just make you want to hug her for joy!
Just this week, the Irish Daily put out a video short with the meanings of some common Irish girl’s names.
Mave is associated with a warrior queen and mead.
So two of the meanings are “she who intoxicates” and the warrior queen. The other two are “She who rules” and “the cause of great joy”. How appropriate that she chose this week to live up to it!
Maybe she’s bored with just Beezus and Willy B, and needed to get out. Before you know it, JB, you’ll be doing sunset walks with Jamie AND with Mave!
Thank you for capturing this to share with us!
(I loved the radio response: “Did you say Mave!?”)
Did she know the bottom of the pineapple awaited her up there?

What courage, and the head bobs say she knows just how special that was. You have a world of people so proud of you, Mave. Well done indeed!

I, too, hope that Dora can join Maeve on an excursion to the top of the Brae. In lieu of fir trees to climb like those on Missy’s Young’s Hill, I hope that Mora B can ascend their lookout structure before too long.

    Way to go Mave!
Thanks for sharing this cute video, she looks very pleased with her self.
Mave and Dora really do need a girls day out on the bray, without those bothersome boys.:revolving_hearts:

Wow!!! Go Mave! She’s come so far! It just brings me so much joy to see her outside and conquering her fears! You go, Girl!!!
(Also, for those who are interested, Save the Chimps posted a reel with Noah, Neggie’s son, on Instagram. He looks even more like his momma when he’s in motion! Neggie’s genes are definitely strong!)

That’s why I’m so happy that CSNW continues with YT! I’m not on IG, FB, or Twitter, and feel like I’d be missing out on great things!

Thanks for mentioning the clip of Noah. Noah definitely looks like his mama! And wouldn’t Negra love to be strolling amongst all that lush green grass right about now?

We all have challenges in life that we need to overcome. Somehow, some way, Mave found a way today to face this challenge and overcome it. Cingratulations, Mave. Thank you JB for being there for her all the way on her walk.

I think Mave is doing it just to please you J.B. ?
I can see her thinking: “well, I will go no further than my usual spot, I just can’t be bothered….”
But today, because you cared so much she went all the way, because she loves you.
    And we love her!!!

Such a brave and courageous act to overcome her fear with just JB to offer her reassurance that all was well. Thank you for helping her expand her world to include the wonderful outdoors.

Thank you, J.B., this really made my day. Such wonderful news! We all know that feeling of wanting to forge ahead, desiring to do so, but when we look at where we are, or we look behind us at what is safe, looking ahead can be so daunting. I understand that hesitation Mave experiences. There is comfort in retreating to the security of her cozy home.

I love the way you coaxed Mave on giving her the encouragement she needed. And I love the way she kept checking in with you. And those little head bobs—my heart exploded. Courage is hard to find, but it is so much easier to muster it up when you’ve got your friend at your side. I was in tears watching her! The best part of all was when Mave reached the top and then began to descend the Bray. She then spent more time looking up at all the wonderful things that were new to her in that moment as opposed to looking down at the familiar territory she’s known for so long. Oh I hope we see many more adventures like this. You go Mave. We love you!

Good things happened to those who wait. 😉
