My phone was filling up with videos of Cy looking out for our boy, George, so I had to share them with you.
Regarding the little skirmish with Terry, this will be an interesting dynamic to keep an eye on. George is outnumbered, and will only be more so over the next few months, so it’s critical that he has Cy backing him up. But bailing him out? That can lead to the development of what we in the primatology business refer to as spoiled brat syndrome. I made that up, of course, but some of my colleagues will recall a certain chimpanzee that could get away with anything because his mom was in charge. And then there’s Willy B. I wouldn’t call Willy B a spoiled brat (he is in a category by himself) but Cy and Honey B did seem to enable his more problematic behavior by defending him without question. I’m actually not worried about George getting away with too much, but I will be curious to see if Cy eventually begins to let out the leash a little bit so that George faces more consequences in situations like these.
For now, I will continue to enjoy watching Cy wait for George at the door to tell him not to go outside without his coat 🙂

Cy, you are my hero!
I can’t wait to see how this George soap opera unfolds:revolving_hearts:
Growing pains at 22, poor little guy.
There’s a good man, Cy.
JB, what do you think worries George about Terry? Just his size? Bc by all accounts, Terry is a love who just needs to let off his steam now and then, as Burrito used to. Or is it just the emotional rollercoaster, in the mind of a guy who’s new to all of this, of a display for no apparent reason? Or is this George and Terry working out who will be #3?
They had a couple of fights during their dyadic intros and Terry went after him the first day of the Terry-Cy-Rayne-Quad. Terry can be very dramatic and has a hard time letting things go.
Oh, so Terry’s a complex individual?
Thx for answering. Rough waters ahead for poor Georgie.
Thanks Jb! Do you think its like a little brother figure to CY thats why he protects him and defends him? Cy seems to have really taken to George, is he just not as close to the other males in the group?
In my opinion, it’s just bc Cy is that smart and that awesome!
Cy seems to protect the vulnerable, no matter who they are. He is somewhat aloof, generally, and would rather be alone with his magazines most of the time but he finds purpose in sticking up for the underdog.
Cy is so impressive as protector of George or whoever is vulnerable. Yeah Cy!
Well that is endearing! Cy has seriously taken on his new role and appears undeterred to step back no matter what the circumstances are. It’s very sweet. However, those are some fierce foot slaps!! (Please don’t let Cy know that I giggled while watching because he still had my full respect, even with the giggles)
I hope with time, George and Terry can become friends or find a way to comfortably coexist. Grooming could help, correct? Do you think George understands the importance or value in grooming or is he still too green to grasp the necessity of it? In captivity, is there a percentage of chimps who simply do not reciprocate grooming? I just wonder if George would groom Terry, would Terry be a little more willing to ‘let it go’ with George. And then there’s the possibility that because Cy is always there to shield George….does this make Terry want to pummel George all the more!
When I was a kid there was a TV show called “Father Knows Best.” In a very calm manner the dad named Jim always solved everyone’s problems. Then he went to sit and read his newspaper. I think Cy, in his awesomeness, is the Jim of CSNW.
We never missed watching that show. I don’t recall the father ever losing his temper.
Hi JB.
I do hope that Cy gets bonuspoints in the form of food and snacks for all that extra work he is doing, when what he really wants to do is sit quietly reading his magazines.
