Humans prefer to make rosehip tea or pulverize the rosehips into a powder and take them as capsules.
We love that the chimpanzees take them in their natural state.
In addition to the wild flowers, I randomly (and quite late in the season), planted sunflower seeds and some marigold starts to accompany a few tomato plants. I think Missy might be onto the fact that there are tomatoes in this garden. Hopefully we can harvest a few before the weather turns cold!
Can you believe it’s almost October?! Lots of good things happen in October, starting with HOOT! (the online auction opens in just a few days and the in-person event is Friday!), and ending with the most important day of the year: Jamieween.

This makes me laugh, Diana, bc although I don’t like Turkish delight or rose petal ice cream, my friend in Berlin calls me “die Hagebuttenkönigin (Rosehip Queen) bc I told him that I love the way it sounds in German 🙂
We have ruga roses growing wild here, and having family in Sylt, he loves them–but they will only grow near the ocean.
I recently saw someone giving their older Highland steer a rosehip supplement, and wondered if Foxie and Burrito could benefit, too. Do they like them?
German words are so fun. That’s a great nickname! I did try passing out some rosehips that I foraged, and they were not universally greeted with excitement. I will have to see if Foxie and Burrito take them – I have personally only seen Jamie, Missy, Annie, and Jody enjoying them. I was pleasantly surprised that George liked them right away.
I’ve noticed that sweet George doesn’t seem to take pokes at the camera person, the way Foxie and Burrito do. What a sweetheart.
Maybe Foxie, our smoothie-loving queen, doesn’t, if they’re sour.
Of course Dr. Missy enjoys rosehips! She knows about their healing powers. Do all the chimps enjoy them? I have friends who enjoy making tea with them but now, after seeing the chimps enjoying them, I am curious what they taste like! Crazy question, have you nibbled on one?

Not all of the chimpanzees enjoy them, and, after trying them myself (on multiple ocassions), I understand why. The flesh of the fruit is very tough and fibrous and there are a LOT of rough seeds. Annie expertly spit those out as she was eating her rosehip for this video. The taste is more on the bitter and sour side than sweet, which I like, but I tend to appreciate bitter and sour more than most people I know. I am going to collect some today and make myself some tea.
