Bray & Play – George Continues to Make Progress!

August 18, 2025 by J.B.

When rescued chimpanzees arrive at the sanctuary, there’s a lot to be intimidated by: unknown caregivers, wide open spaces, and unfamiliar chimps all around. So we try to take things one step at a time. This morning, George went on the Bray at the same time that his neighbors were outside for the very first time and he handled it like a champ! PLUS: Bonus footage of George’s 2nd meeting with Terry!

We also celebrated the anniversary of Honey B, Willy B, and Mave’s arrival today. Can you believe it’s been six years? Actually, when Willy B wakes us all up in the middle of the night with his cage-rattling displays, it sometimes feels like he’s been here for 60. But for the most part, it seems like they just got here yesterday. The party forages included pasta with veggie sauce, Dixie cups filled with juice-soaked chow, berries, tomatoes, figs, and endives. I wasn’t able to to snap too many photos of the guests of honor, or anyone for that matter, but here are a few.

Gosh that entrance onto the Bray shows how powerful George is. And his play with Terry is full on!!
Are the Californians back with the Lucky 6 ?? If not are they ever going to to live together again?

I understand from Diana’s comment on ‘THE HUG’ in yesterday’s
blog that Mave, Beans and Willy B. are in their seperate group, apart from Cy’s group( for now I think).
I assume that George’s arrival halted the reintroduction with the others.

Thanks Marianne, I must have missed that. Its a shame, hopefully they can be reintroduced soon

George is doing so Great !
Sometimes ( when he’s diplaying) he seems like a big fierce Chimp, and then (when he’s playing hand clap) his little face is so sweet like a baby.:revolving_hearts:
And I love all of the party’s .
Soon there will be a party everyday… Yay !

George’s first bounce on the platform looks like Jamie launching when she races the gator!
George is so brave, but Im glad he had all of you there to back him up, you can tell he appreciates your presence.
I like how Terry started to mirror George’s evasion pirouettes!
I, too, hope he gets to meet Mave. Everyone deserves to have a Mave hug.

How I love George! The immediate mirroring when he and Terry met was fascinating. And his display outside was one to behold. I so look forward to seeing so much more of this young, vibrant guy.

What a pair those two are! They are so much fun to watch, they seem to be quite fond of each other. I hope it stays that way.

George’s entrance onto the Bray was full throttle. Not sure Foxie was impressed and Annie decided to tippy toe back inside, perhaps to enjoy the safety of spying through the windows instead. Jamie…..clearly unfazed by the new kid.

It is fascinating watching George experience so many changes in his life over such a short period of time. He seems to have accepted all his caregivers seeking you out as trusted friends. It’s all so endearing. (Chad, I hope Burrito isn’t jealous of your new friendship.)

Sending a big “Happy 6th Anniversary of your arrival to sanctuary” to Mave, Honey B and Willy B!! I think Willy B wakes up in the middle of each night to hoot and rattle the cages because he is so happy to be there. It’s his way of letting you know how much he loves you. 🙂

George came in like a freight train, ready to roll. I’m glad his good human buddies made him feel at ease, especially with a little happy clapping. just think one day there will be an anniversary for George’s arrival just like the party today.

Yes! What a softie that Terry…staying very low so he would not intimidate Geaorge, and encouraging him to play and cuddle….what a sweetheart.
