A Rose for George

May 27, 2025 by Sabrina

We’re still on a journey to discover what George loves—whether it’s snacks or ways to keep him entertained—so we’re always trying out new ideas. I happen to have several big rose bushes at home and caregiver Ellen, recalled that some chimps she’s cared for in the past went wild for roses. So I let her snip a few for George, and that little treat turned into the blog video we’re sharing today.

A tasty treat for George today. Soon he’ll be going outside to explore other floral delights.

Not to get off topic here, but Sabrina, your roses are beautiful!

Oh, that is adorable. I wonder if George will also take a liking to lilacs when they next appear. Todays video brought to mind the Valentine’s Party from 2018 and the footage of Jody and her friends savoring their roses.

    “They love me!”

They ARE beautiful roses, Sabrina! My 2nd favorite color (absolute fav is a pale version of this, cream with a touch of peach/yellow at top of petals).
I was worried at first that he would not know how to process it because it looked like he was going to eat the stem. But he figured it out very quickly!

He can relax now. No entertainment value required. I wonder how feels.

George made fast work of that beautiful rose! You must be having fun rising to the challenge to find things George enjoys. Roses? Definitely!

Oh those beautiful lips! How thoughtful of you Ellen and Sabrina…..and you got to see how much he appreciated it. BTW, Kathy…this is all new to him, so he’s bound to be a little hesitant right now, but he’s already a lot brighter than that first video. And his job now is just to be a chimp.

George is so sweet eating the rose. It’s wonderful to see him trying out new foods. I just love seeing him become more comfortable!
By the way, for any of the folks who follow Chimp Haven on Instagram, they posted a story with Negra’s daughter, Heidi, enjoying a coconut!!! Take a look before it’s gone. She looks so much like her momma!

A sweet rose for sweet George. It looks like he may have thought the stem was a straw for a minute.
