Last month, the North American Primate Sanctuary Alliance (NAPSA) held a fun little contest for a sanctuary to win a brand new Looky Lou enrichment mirror and feeder that was generously donated by Wildlife Toybox.
We won the contest because Chimpanzee Sanctuary Northwest donors are always so generous and caring!
Today, Ellen was George’s caregiver today and she set it up to see how George would react. He was very interested, as you can see from the video she took!
Thanks to NAPSA, Wildlife Toybox, and our donors for enriching George’s life!
Every day, he seems to be coming more and more out of his shell as he relaxes at the sanctuary. It’s a joy to see him get more comfortable and to hear stories from all of the caregivers each day.

George is fascinating to watch. Curious, inquisitive, and slow as he takes everything in whether it is playtime at the doorway with Kelsi or observing himself in the mirror. The movement of his hands, the way he strokes his brow, his gentle claps, and his concentration as he watches every move….it’s all so beautiful. Intimate.
Thank you donors, NAPSA, and Wildlife Toybox! Thank you caregivers for letting George have access to the mirror (a prized item indeed) first so he could see who he really is.
This absolutely warms my heart. Sweet baby is coming back to his true self thanks to you all. The best of humanity!
So glad George got this enrichment! Hopefully he will integrate with a group soon ?
What a smart, engaging fellow George is! I cannot wait to see more of him, and watch him meet and engage with his new chimpanzee family.
And I’m so glad that CSNW was able to win a contest!
Mirror, Mirror, on the wall, George is the fairest of them all !:revolving_hearts:
I totally agree. I look forward to his emetgence from quarantine to meet his new friends.
Yes! Let’s spoil him!
Diaba, what happened to the previous Looky Lou mirror?
George seems to be a delightful young guy who is so interested in everything in his new environment. My heart broke as he stroked and patted his back, I can’t wait to see him being welcomed and embraced by his new family members.
I love how George primps himself in front of the mirror!
Fascinating. Just really love this.
Oh yeah, gosh it must be almost 2 years now since he’s been groomed. It’s hard to groom your own back. Poor George. :pensive: I am so very much looking forward to all the things that George has to look forward to.
I assume he hasn’t had his health check yet. It’ll be good to get that behind him, so if there are any health issues, they can get right on it.
Info for the newcomers to the blog: CSNW has their own on site clinic and vet. But for a full health evaluation, they bring other types of specialists in. Like dentists and cardiologist, et al. Down the road it’ll be fun watching George in his PRT sessions (positive reinforcement training). All the other chimps and caregivers are great at it. I think George will be really good at it too. He seems like he’s gonna be a fun guy. Ugh quarentine always seems so long
George is so cute admiring his own reflection! It’s so great to see him taking an interest in the enrichment!
I agree Diana…..there’s been a significant change in him already. His eyes seem brighter, not so scared and he’s relaxing with his new enrichment. I bet there’s a very intelligent boy in there, just waiting to emerge. How lovely it will be to see his first grooming sessions, amongst all the other firsts.
living in Bandon and seeing the progress George has made it warms my heart.
Mary, I’m just so happy for you and all of George’s prior friends who will get to watch him thrive at the wonderful CSNW.
